Fine-quality rice is being sold at ₹30 a kg through 13 cooperative stores and two Amudham departmental stores in Coimbatore district from Wednesday (October 21), as part of the Tamil Nadu government’s initiative to make essential commodities available at affordable prices.
The scheme was inaugurated at the supermarket of the Coimbatore District Consumer Cooperative Wholesale Store (Chinthamani) on Wednesday. A total of 60 tonnes of fine-quality rice has been allocated to the district in the first phase, according to the Department of Cooperatives.
A maximum of 5 kg of rice will be sold to each family under the scheme, which aims to contain the rise in the price of fine-quality rice and ensure its availability at a reasonable rate.
The rice is available at cooperative stores in Coimbatore city, Pollachi, Valparai, Vadugapalayam, Annur, Sulur and Irugur, among other locations. The two Amudham outlets covered under the scheme are in Chettipalayam, Singanallur, and R.S. Puram.
A. Alagiri, Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Coimbatore Region, T. Dhanapriya, Senior Regional Manager of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, and other officials attended the inauguration.
The public can register complaints about deficiencies in service by calling 7338720333, the department said.
