Jamaican Drug Lord’s US Release Pushed Back

JAMAICA · CRIME

The US Bureau of Prisons lists 28 January 2029 as the release date for Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke, the Jamaican drug lord held in New Jersey. That is one year later than the date its public records showed earlier this year.

The change surfaced on Wednesday 14 October, as reports spread that Coke had fought fellow inmate Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs at Fort Dix federal prison. For American readers, the story links a gang boss extradited by Washington in 2010 to the music mogul known worldwide as Diddy.

What the Prison Records Show

The Bureau of Prisons inmate locator, a free public database, lists the Jamaican drug lord, 57, as inmate 02257-748 at the Fort Dix prison. His projected release date there now reads 28 January 2029.

Radio Jamaica and the Jamaica Observer both reported that the same database showed 29 January 2028 earlier this year. Nationwide News, a Kingston radio network, said that was the date it saw when it checked the site in July.

Radio Jamaica, a national broadcaster based in Kingston, recalled reports in May that Coke was in line for an early release. The station said US prison authorities had not publicly confirmed that the reported fight caused the new date.

The Reported Fight With Diddy

The US entertainment site TMZ reported on Wednesday that the Jamaican drug lord and Combs had a physical fight inside the prison. The Jamaica Observer, citing that report, said Combs suffered a head injury and was taken to an outside medical facility.

Nationwide News, also citing TMZ, said Coke confronted Combs over prison sweeps that seized contraband, including mobile phones, from several inmates. The Observer said the clash followed disciplinary action against fellow inmates that was blamed on Combs.

US prison authorities have not publicly linked the fight to Coke’s new release date. The Observer said the circumstances of the incident had not been independently verified.

Who Christopher Coke Is

The Jamaican drug lord is the former leader of the Shower Posse, a criminal network rooted in West Kingston, the western side of Jamaica’s capital. Nationwide News calls him a West Kingston strongman, meaning a boss who held sway over a whole district.

The United States sought him on drug charges, and he was extradited in June 2010 after a month-long manhunt in Jamaica. The Observer reports that more than 70 people died during that operation.

In 2012 a US court sentenced him to 23 years in prison after he pleaded guilty. The charges included conspiring to traffic large amounts of marijuana and cocaine into the United States and conspiring to commit assault in aid of racketeering.

Why Diddy Is at Fort Dix

Sean Combs, the American music mogul known as Diddy, was sentenced last year to just over four years in federal prison. The Observer said he was convicted on prostitution-related charges involving two of his former girlfriends.

The Bureau of Prisons locator lists Combs, 56, at Fort Dix under register number 37452-054. His projected release date is 2 March 2028, almost 11 months before Coke’s new date.

What It Means for You

For US readers, the Jamaican drug lord’s case shows that a federal prisoner’s release date is a projection that can change while the sentence runs. Anyone can check a prisoner’s current date on the Bureau of Prisons inmate locator by name or register number.

For followers of the Combs case, the same public database lists his projected release as 2 March 2028. The record shows only dates and places, not disciplinary findings or the reasons behind a change.

In Jamaica, Coke’s name still recalls the deadly 2010 manhunt for him, and his case remains national news. The Observer, Radio Jamaica and Nationwide News all reported the new date on Wednesday.

Deportations from the United States were already news in Kingston after Jamaica received 22 third-country nationals on Tuesday 13 October under a deal with Washington. A guide to Jamaica and its neighbours in the Caribbean explains the island’s place in the region.

What Is Not Known

It is not known why the Bureau of Prisons moved the Jamaican drug lord’s date, or exactly when it changed. US prison authorities have not publicly linked it to the reported fight.

Nationwide News, citing TMZ, dated the fight to Friday 9 October, while the Observer said Combs went to hospital on Wednesday. The extent of any injury to Combs has not been officially confirmed.

It is also not known whether either man faces new charges or prison discipline over the incident. Nationwide News said it had asked the Bureau of Prisons for an explanation.
