By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Police are investigating the theft of copper cables from a Smart telecommunications tower in San Felipe Village, Orange Walk District.
A 26 year old maintenance worker with Smart’s Orange Walk branch reported that on Wednesday, October 21, he visited the site for routine checks and maintenance.
He noticed that a side fence had been cut. On further inspection, he found that two copper cables, each measuring 200 feet, along with a six foot grounding cable running from the ground to the equipment house, were missing.
In total, 406 feet of copper was taken, valued at $4,466.
The worker said there are cameras at the site, but they were not working at the time, preventing staff from seeing who entered or when.
Scenes of Crime personnel processed the scene. No suspects have been identified.
