The defeat at the Mohammed VI Football Complex on Sunday saw the Europeans secure their first victory at the tournament, with Maia Melgard scoring twice after Isabella Lepore had opened the scoring with a long-range strike.
Ghana, returning to the competition after missing the previous edition, struggled to contain Norway’s attacking threat and were punished by three impressive goals.
Coach Joe Nana Adarkwa’s side must now regroup ahead of their remaining group matches against Brazil and Canada if they are to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
Norway took control of the contest with a spectacular opener from Lepore, who unleashed a powerful effort from approximately 30 yards.
Her strike crashed against the underside of the crossbar before crossing the goal line, giving the European side the advantage and putting Ghana under pressure early in the match.
The Black Maidens faced a difficult challenge as Norway looked to build on their lead, and the Europeans soon produced another moment of quality to extend their advantage.
Hanne Nesse received possession near the edge of the penalty area before laying the ball off to Melgard. The forward shifted the ball onto her left foot and curled a superb finish into the net to make it 2-0.
Ghana struggled to find a response before the break but returned with greater attacking intent in the second half as they attempted to reduce the deficit.
Their best opportunity came through substitute Cynthia Obinsrewuo, who found herself through on goal with a chance to bring the Black Maidens back into the contest.
However, Norwegian goalkeeper Erla Braathen made an important intervention, standing her ground to deny the Ghanaian forward and preserve her side’s two-goal advantage.
The missed opportunity proved costly for Ghana, who were unable to turn their improved second-half performance into a goal.
Norway subsequently put the result beyond doubt midway through the second half, with Melgard completing her brace in another impressive attacking move.
The forward exchanged passes from a corner before cutting inside and unleashing a powerful effort that gave Ghana goalkeeper Belinda Manu Aklie no chance.
The goal completed a convincing performance from Norway, whose three strikes demonstrated their ability to capitalise on opportunities in the final third.
For Ghana, the result represents a disappointing start to their return to the U-17 Women's World Cup. The Black Maidens had hoped to begin their campaign with a positive result but now face the challenge of recovering from an opening-day defeat.
The loss leaves Adarkwa’s team needing to improve in their upcoming fixtures, with Brazil and Canada still to face in a competitive Group C.
Ghana will have to find greater attacking efficiency while tightening their defensive organisation to stand a chance of collecting points in their remaining matches.
Despite the setback, the Black Maidens still have an opportunity to revive their campaign, although their next performances will be crucial to their chances of progressing beyond the group stage.
Norway, meanwhile, will take confidence from their convincing victory as they begin their quest for progress in the tournament.
Ghana must now turn their attention to their second group match, with the players and technical team tasked with responding positively to the defeat and keeping their World Cup ambitions alive.
