Hungary is well prepared for winter, with gas supplies expected to remain secure even if only the reserves already in storage are used. The country’s gas storage facilities are currently 77 percent full, said the Ministry of Economy and Energy.
According to the ministry’s statement, Hungary has storage capacities that are outstanding even by international standards. A total of approximately 6.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas can be stored at five locations: Hajdúszoboszló, Kardoskút, Pusztaederics, Szőreg, and Zsana.
Gas storage facilities are 77 percent full, which is higher than the EU average of less than 74 percent and also higher than the domestic figure from a year ago.
Available reserves have already exceeded 4.8 billion cubic meters, that is more than one and a half times the annual residential consumption over the past period,
the ministry reported.
The consumption-based storage level stands at 55 percent, which is significantly higher than the European average of 24 percent, the ministry noted.
The stored volume could cover the country’s entire natural gas demand for 96 winter days, and it would be sufficient to meet households’ needs for more than 200 winter days. In addition to these reserves, continuous import and domestic production in Hungary ensure an uninterrupted supply to Hungarian consumers, the ministry added.
The planned expansion of the Croatia–Hungary natural gas interconnector will strengthen regional energy security. Continue reading
