Today in Motorsport History, October 23: MotoGP Lost Marco Simoncelli at Sepang in 2011

Marco Simoncelli died at Sepang 15 years ago today, on October 23, 2011, after a crash on the second lap of the Malaysian Grand Prix. He was 24. The race was red-flagged, a restart was pencilled in and then dropped, and one lap was all MotoGP got. No winner was declared and no points were awarded. It was the first death in the premier class since Daijiro Kato’s at the 2003 Japanese Grand Prix, and it came just over a year after Moto2 rider Shoya Tomizawa died at Misano.

The season he was finally having

Simoncelli arrived in 2011 as the 2008 250cc world champion, in his second year with the San Carlo Honda Gresini team after finishing eighth in the 2010 standings. This was the year it came together. He took pole at Catalunya in June, stood on the podium at Brno, and a week before Sepang finished second to Casey Stoner at Phillip Island, his best result in the class. He was sixth in the championship, he had signed to stay with Gresini for 2012 on a Honda RC213V, and he was the satellite rider who could actually run with the factory bikes. Phillip Island, for what it is worth, would produce a very different kind of Sunday two years later, which we covered in our Márquez black-flag story.

It had also been a heavy week for the sport. Dan Wheldon was killed in the IndyCar finale at Las Vegas on October 16, the same day Stoner clinched his second MotoGP title in Australia. Paddocks do not recover from a week like that, and Sepang was the next stop.

Sunday at Sepang

Pedrosa took pole with a Repsol Honda lockout of the front row, and Stoner took the lead from Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso at the start. On lap two, Simoncelli, running fourth, lost the front end on the exit of the Turn 11 right-hander. Bike and rider slid across the track and into the path of Colin Edwards (Tech 3 Yamaha) and Valentino Rossi (Ducati), who had no room to avoid him. Both hit him. Edwards suffered a separated shoulder, and Rossi got his bike back to the pits. Simoncelli’s helmet came off in the impact.

The race was red-flagged immediately. MotoGP medical director Michele Macchiagodena said Simoncelli went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance, and doctors worked on him for about 45 minutes before declaring him dead at 4:56pm local time. A 4:30pm restart had been planned, then delayed, then cancelled. Sepang’s chairman said two days later that the circuit and Dorna had agreed the race could not continue, and that the circuit had followed every precaution required by the FIM, the Malaysian motorsport authority and Dorna. Stoner, who had taken the lead at the start, said watching the footage left him feeling “sick inside.”

Why it mattered

Two deaths in just over a year, in two different classes, changed the tone of the paddock. Simoncelli was one of the most popular riders in it, and “Super Sic” was the name on his team’s own tribute that night. The crash itself began as an ordinary front-end slide at a corner exit, the kind of fall riders walk away from most weekends. That is what made it so hard for the sport to absorb.

It also sharpened a question that never fully went away: how much protection a helmet can promise when everything goes wrong at once. Simoncelli’s helmet separated from his head in the impact, and the helmet’s developer later attributed that to the chin strap tearing out. That discussion has not stopped. For a current example of how differently racing’s rulebooks treat helmet life, see our look at the helmet that expires differently in every rulebook.

What changed, and what didn’t

Be careful with the word “changed.” In the sources I could verify, the crash is not tied to a single rule rewrite. Sepang’s own statement said the circuit would work with the FIM and Dorna on whether further rider-safety measures were possible, and that is as specific as the official record gets. What did change is easier to see and name:

• Misano’s circuit was renamed Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, announced in November 2011 and made official the following year.
• The Fondazione Marco Simoncelli 58 was set up in his name, and his father Paolo later started the Sic58 Squadra Corse team.
• On September 8, 2016, ahead of the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano, Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta and Paolo Simoncelli announced that MotoGP was retiring the No. 58. “This number, from now, belongs to the Simoncelli family,” Ezpeleta said.

That last item matters beyond Simoncelli. The 58 joined Kato’s 74 and Tomizawa’s 48 on the sport’s list of retired numbers, alongside honorary retirements for Kevin Schwantz (34) and Loris Capirossi (65). It is a short list, and three of its five numbers belong to riders killed racing. Only the Simoncelli family can reverse the 58’s retirement, and they have not.

Simoncelli’s career numbers (14 Grand Prix wins, 31 podiums and one world title, by one count across all classes) are the stat line. The thing people remember is what the sport lost on a Sunday when he was 24 and in the best form of his career.
