Houthis claim strikes on Riyadh airport, warn airlines to avoid Saudi airspace

Houthis have claimed responsibility for several attacks on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, warning airlines to avoid Saudi airspace. The recent strikes, reported by the Washington Post, add to a series of incidents that have disrupted operations at the airport. Saudi authorities confirmed that recent attacks resulted in casualties and temporarily shut down the airport. The ongoing Houthi campaign, involving ballistic and cruise missiles, appears to increase the likelihood of further disruptions in Saudi airspace.

Key Takeaways

• Market pricing suggests an increased likelihood of a nationwide Saudi airspace closure following the Houthi attacks.
• The November 1 sub-market saw a notable increase in YES pricing, reflecting concerns about security in the coming weeks.
• The January 1 sub-market indicates a possibly higher risk of airspace closure, with a larger jump in YES pricing.

What to Watch

Observers should monitor announcements from the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation and Saudi Air Navigation Services for any formal airspace closure statements. Developments in the geopolitical situation, such as potential escalations with Iran or further Houthi attacks on key Saudi infrastructure, could influence pricing significantly. Analysts will also watch for international advisories from entities like the FAA or EASA that could affect the market outlook.
