Guwahati: The Zubeen Garg Mahotsav Organising Committee on Wednesday announced in a letter that it was temporarily suspending all programmes planned for the Zubeen Mahotsav on November 18, 19 and 20, citing respect for the views and feelings of the late singer’s family and admirers. The committee also said it would hold no festival-type programme in the future until justice was delivered to Zubeen Garg.
The announcement follows the public distancing of several prominent figures from the proposed event. Garima Saikia Garg, Union minister Pabitra Margherita, singer Manas Robin, AASU president Utpal Sarma and others, whom the organisers had earlier claimed would be part of the festival, had separately disassociated themselves from it.
Addressing the people of Assam, the committee said the decision was taken after discussions within the committee. It said it held the opinions, feelings and reactions of Zubeen’s family and his countless admirers and well-wishers in deep respect.

Explaining the decision, the committee said, “Our main goal is justice for Zubeen Garg. For us, justice for Zubeenda is not merely a demand; it is our moral responsibility and collective commitment.”
Making clear that the suspension was not limited to this year’s festival, the committee said, “We want to declare clearly that until Zubeen Garg gets justice, we have decided not to organise any such festival-oriented programme in future.” It added, “We firmly believe that the highest expression of true respect and commitment to Zubeenda is to give priority to the demand for his getting justice.”
The committee said it had formally informed the people of Assam, political parties, organisations, well-wishers and the media of the decision through social media. It said it had been raising its voice for justice for Zubeen in the past and would continue the fight with steadfast commitment, firmness and a sense of responsibility.
Seeking public support, the committee said, “We sincerely hope for your sympathy, cooperation and understanding for this decision. In this journey for justice for Zubeenda, we will all move ahead united with resolve, and this is our pledge,” it added.
