Deutsche Bank says its first institutional digital asset service is weeks away. Its own product material already lists Bitcoin, Ether and three stablecoins, but its executive described a rollout beginning with major cryptocurrencies before adding ways to move into and out of stablecoins. The difference between a supported asset, a custody account ready for a particular customer, and a live conversion service is the central question for launch day.
Summary
- Deutsche Bank said on October 16 that its first digital asset custody service is weeks from launch.
- Its September release named Bitcoin, Ether and 3 stablecoins among selected assets planned for custody.
- As of October 16, the bank’s product page still ties service availability to regulatory completion and technical readiness.
- European MiCA Article 75 requires a client custody agreement, position records and a documented safekeeping policy.
- Asian financial center expansion is planned for 2027, after an initial German launch.
Deutsche Bank has moved its digital asset custody launch into a matter of weeks as it prepares to hold selected crypto assets for institutional and corporate clients in Germany.
In an October 16 Reuters interview, corporate bank co-head Gerald Podobnik described Bitcoin and Ether custody as the initial service and said stablecoin movement, tokenized deposits and digital securities would follow. He expects expansion to Asian financial centers next year. The bank has not announced a go-live date or identified a first live customer in that interview.

Germany comes first, but the launch date remains conditional
Deutsche Bank’s September 16 release said it expected to take first European institutional and corporate clients live in 2026, subject to the applicable regulatory timeline. The new interview narrows the company’s expectation to weeks but does not remove that condition. A prior account of its custody plan listed the asset classes and operational controls announced in September. The October development is the proximity of the launch and an explicit sequence for later products.
The bank’s current digital asset custody page says its service will become available after regulatory completion and technical readiness. It lists Germany as the home market with cross-border European servicing under applicable rules. The web page offers a contact address and describes customer types; a product description and inquiry form are not proof that the first customer has deposited coins.
The contemplated clients are institutions, multinational companies, governments, sovereign entities and wealth managers served by the corporate bank. There is no announced retail wallet or public trading app in the launch plan. If a bank can hold Bitcoin for a fund, an individual Deutsche Bank deposit customer does not automatically get an account that buys Bitcoin. The product’s permissions and contracts belong to the entity receiving the service.
The bank described custody and transfer services as the initial core functions. It will manage client wallets and private keys, allowing customers to avoid building a complete key management system of their own. That is a meaningful operational service even if neither trading nor stablecoin conversion goes live on the first day. The September release says the client may transfer assets to third parties, which raises separate approval, screening and destination controls.
A list of supported tokens is not a list of live trades
The bank’s September announcement named Bitcoin, Ether, USDC, EURC and EURAU among the selected assets intended for launch. Its product page displays all five under supported tokens and blockchains. Podobnik’s October comments, however, distinguish an initial Bitcoin and Ether custody rollout from later services to help clients move money into and out of mainstream stablecoins. A careful reading keeps custody eligibility distinct from fiat conversion or payment functionality. The public record does not establish exactly when each stablecoin will be accepted by a live client.
USDC is a dollar-linked token issued by Circle; EURC is Circle’s euro-linked coin. EURAU is a separate euro stablecoin. Each has its own issuer, redemption rules, chains and regulatory status. A bank can technically control a private key for a token while still declining to approve a particular issuer, chain, counterparty or use for a given customer. Deutsche Bank said asset additions depend on client demand, product approvals, risk management and regulation.
One way to audit the launch is to ask four consecutive questions for each of the five names. Can the client receive the asset into a Deutsche Bank-controlled wallet? Can the client instruct an external transfer? Can the client exchange fiat for the token using the bank? Can the client redeem or sell the token back into commercial bank money through that same relationship? Public material supports the intention to provide custody and transfers. It does not show a live execution or fiat redemption facility for all five.
The distinction matters especially for stablecoins. A customer might already own USDC on an exchange and want the bank to safeguard it. Another might want to pay a supplier by moving euros from a deposit account into a stablecoin and sending it abroad. The second request needs pricing, issuer access, liquidity and a route back into ordinary money, in addition to the custody system. The executive’s phased description points to that extra work without spelling out its launch schedule.
For Bitcoin and Ether, bank custody does not automatically supply a trading venue either. A client can buy coins elsewhere and transfer them to a bank’s custody address, or it might arrange execution with a separate broker. The bank’s product page describes safekeeping and transfers, not a universal commitment to act as dealer, exchange or market maker. Proof of launch should therefore be a named custody arrangement or client confirmation, not an inference drawn from a list of assets on a marketing page.
The bank will control keys under a client agreement
Deutsche Bank says its architecture includes hardware security modules, separate warm and cold environments, controls requiring multiple approvals, backup and recovery arrangements, and a redundant technical setup. Warm storage can support more frequent authorized movements; cold storage generally limits online exposure at the cost of slower operations. The customer trades self-managed keys for a bank-run approval chain and a claim defined by the custody agreement. A transfer initiated without the right authorizations can be rejected even when the relevant blockchain is available.
Its product page lists access through the bank’s Autobahn or Corporate Bank portal and describes customizable client transfer approval. A corporate treasury might require two employees to sign off before coins move; a fund may apply different account permissions. The public site does not publish a standard approval duration, insurance limit or per-asset fee schedule. Those details belong in the client agreement, not in assumptions about what bank branding implies.
The mechanism has two ledgers. Onchain, a wallet balance records coins controlled by the bank’s keys. Offchain, the bank records which client owns the claim and which instructions were authorized. Reconciliation must keep the blockchain balance, the bank’s internal positions and any pending transfers consistent. The bank’s statement that it will segregate customer assets describes a control objective; the contractual and technical details of segregation are decisive if there is a shortfall or dispute.
The MiCA custody rule is unusually specific about those duties. Article 75 requires the provider and client to agree on the service, custody policy, communication methods, security systems, fees and applicable law. It requires positions to be recorded in each client’s name and movements to be reflected in the register. It also obliges the provider to make a summary of its custody policy available on request. Those requirements offer a more concrete launch checklist than a generic claim of institutional security.
Article 75 also addresses rights attached to crypto assets. Where applicable, a custodian must facilitate their exercise and record events that create or change a client’s rights. That is straightforward to state and less simple to implement when a chain splits, a token distributes another asset, or a smart contract changes the underlying entitlement. The bank has not released a product-specific policy for every such event in its public materials. The correct question for a fund or corporate customer is how the agreement assigns decisions and liability.
Who owns the coins when the bank holds the keys?
The blockchain identifies the address controlling a balance; it does not display the name of the fund or company behind an omnibus account. MiCA’s requirement for a client-by-client register addresses that gap in the bank’s records. A custodian can hold assets in individual wallets, shared operational wallets or a combination, while recording each customer’s position in an internal system. Deutsche Bank has said assets will be segregated but has not published a complete wallet architecture or sample custody agreement for the forthcoming service.

Ownership and control become separate questions in a bankruptcy or an operational failure. A client may remain the beneficial owner under the custody arrangement while the bank controls the keys that move the coins. Whether assets can be returned promptly depends on accurate records, enforceable contractual rights and access to wallets. A bank logo does not answer whether a particular holding is a deposit liability, a custodial asset or a token issued by an outside company. The specific legal treatment has to follow the asset and the agreement.
The distinction is clearest with the planned stablecoins. A client placing USDC into bank custody still relies on the token issuer’s promise and reserves for the coin’s dollar value. Deutsche Bank could be responsible for protecting the customer’s access to that token, while Circle is responsible under its terms for redemption. A tokenized Deutsche Bank deposit, if later issued, would be a different claim on the bank itself. A client holding EURC and a client holding a tokenized euro deposit might see two euro-denominated assets on a portal but face different issuers and recovery arrangements.
Transactions add another layer. A transfer entered into the bank’s portal may await client authorization, internal sanctions screening and submission to the blockchain. A block explorer can confirm onchain settlement, but the bank still has to assign the outflow to the right customer and reconcile any fees. If a transaction fails or is sent to an unsupported network, responsibility turns on the bank’s service terms and the recorded instruction. The public launch materials do not prescribe a universal outcome for such cases.
The custody agreement required by Article 75 must state fees and the applicable law. These provisions are financial facts for an institution weighing the new bank service against an existing specialized custodian. Safekeeping costs might be charged on assets, transactions or both. Client documents could define recovery procedures, limits on authorized destinations, and treatment of income or new tokens arising from an asset. None of those prices or schedules was given in the October interview, so a cost comparison would currently be invented.
An outsourced component does not outsource the client relationship
The bank says it will use selected external providers for defined technical components. It signed a global agreement with Swiss infrastructure company Taurus in 2023 to develop custody and tokenization capabilities. A later Taurus integration with Swift’s ledger shows the provider working on a broader payment stack, but neither the Swift integration nor Taurus’s other clients proves that Deutsche Bank’s particular customer service is live.
Outsourcing can divide the work of wallet software, transaction policy, hardware and connectivity across multiple companies. It does not make every company a direct custodian of the customer’s assets. Deutsche Bank’s September description says the bank manages keys and wallets on the client’s behalf. A customer should be able to identify which legal entity holds its account, which firms can technically initiate movements, and who is responsible under the contract if a provider fails.
One potential failure path is a compromised transfer instruction. Another is a technical interruption that prevents the bank from accessing a wallet at the time a client needs to move assets. The bank described backup, multi-person approval and redundant infrastructure as protections. A live service will reveal service levels, escalation procedures and actual incident reporting. No independent public audit of its production custody environment was included in the September release.
The EU’s regulatory framework specifies standards for crypto custody and outsourcing, while operational resilience obligations govern many financial entities more generally. The bank’s existing supervision is not a substitute for the individual client contract. A separate review of MiCA custodians describes regulators examining firms’ ability to safeguard customer assets and manage technology risks. Deutsche Bank’s customer documents would show how its own service addresses those duties.
The location of custody matters as well. The product page says the service is provided from Deutsche Bank AG in Frankfurt and may be passported for European clients. A German service to an eligible European institution is not the same as a locally licensed operation in an Asian financial center. Podobnik’s 2027 Asian plan requires separate decisions about jurisdiction, booking entity, licensing, custody infrastructure and local customer contracts.
The commercial case extends beyond holding coins
The bank’s immediate plan is a custody relationship. Its stated roadmap includes stablecoin services, tokenized deposits and help issuing securities on a blockchain. The products are linked by customer infrastructure but carry different legal claims. Bitcoin is a crypto asset held for a customer. A tokenized deposit represents a claim on the issuing bank. A digital bond represents a security with an issuer, terms and ownership records. Putting all three behind one portal does not collapse them into a single risk or regulatory category.
Podobnik said the move supports a corporate banking growth strategy targeting 8% compound annual growth through 2028. The bank did not say digital asset custody itself would grow 8% or disclose a revenue target, client asset target or anticipated share of the corporate bank’s growth from the product. The number is an overall business objective, not a forecast for crypto assets.
There is a plausible reason to start with custody. A company using stablecoins for settlements or planning tokenized bond issuance needs a way to hold, authorize and account for digital assets. Existing bank customers may prefer a familiar contracting and reporting relationship to opening several third-party wallets. Deutsche Bank said the service will complement existing banking activity. It can offer safekeeping before it has a complete issuance and payment product.
The counterargument is that custody alone may be hard to distinguish. Specialized providers already sell key management, while other banks have begun regulated digital asset custody. South Africa’s Absa, for example, introduced an institutional Bitcoin offering. Deutsche Bank’s own advantage would have to come from access to its corporate customers and integration with conventional accounts, controls and future tokenized services. Neither the bank nor Reuters supplied live asset balances or transaction fees with which to test that commercial case.
European competition is already measurable. A September review of EU banks under MiCA counted about 80 banks on the register at the time, according to its analysis of regulator data. Registration or notification does not mean every bank offers the same customer-facing service, and the count is dated. It does show why a bank announcing custody is entering an established regulatory field rather than creating a category from scratch.
Banks pursuing tokenized deposits present another competing route for payments. A tokenized claim on an existing bank balance can remain within the bank’s liability structure, while USDC belongs to the stablecoin issuer’s structure. An earlier explainer on tokenized deposits sets out that distinction. Deutsche Bank has yet to announce product terms, eligible holders or the ledger for its own proposed tokenized deposit. It would be premature to treat it as a live alternative to the stablecoins listed on its custody page.
Asia raises a different competitive question. A German client served from Frankfurt and an Asian client booked at an overseas branch can face different regulators, eligible tokens and settlement hours. The executive’s plan to move into Asian financial centers in 2027 is a statement of direction, not evidence that a particular branch has obtained a local custody permission or completed technical deployment. An identifiable entity, market and launch date would turn the intention into a checkable development. The number of existing corporate banking relationships in a region cannot serve as a proxy for assets already held in the new custody platform.
Cross-border expansion requires more than reusing the same software. The custody account identifies the bank entity legally responsible for the assets. A client in another jurisdiction may need a local contractual entity or an approved cross-border service. Token admission policies may differ because the jurisdiction treats stablecoins, securities tokens and other crypto assets differently. A wallet that can technically receive a token does not determine whether the bank is permitted to offer its custody to a particular customer. Podobnik did not identify which of these choices the bank has made for Asia.
Even the German start has two geographic descriptions. The September statement spoke of European institutional and corporate clients. The current product page locates the service in Germany and says cross-border servicing across Europe will follow applicable rules. These statements can fit together: the operational base can be Frankfurt while eligible corporate clients elsewhere in Europe contract for the service. The precise eligible countries and booking arrangements belong in launch documents. It would be premature to say a public product page grants every company in the European Union the same access on day one.
The banking relationship can create practical advantages after launch. A corporate customer already using Deutsche Bank for cash management may want a single institution to control digital asset transfers alongside its treasury approval process. The customer could still need a separate stablecoin issuer relationship, exchange liquidity or a broker for execution. The bank’s stated service solves one part of the chain, safekeeping, and its roadmap would add other parts only as they receive approvals and enter production. An end-to-end transaction would be more persuasive evidence than a product list.
A documented client example could show where the handoffs occur without disclosing confidential holdings. The bank could identify the asset and chain, state whether the customer sourced it elsewhere, show that a deposit reached a bank-controlled wallet, and explain how authorized officers approved a transfer. For a stablecoin, it could say whether issuance and redemption are handled by the bank, a token issuer or a third-party liquidity provider. These facts would make the difference between custody and payment visible to readers and prospective customers. They have not been specified in the public October interview.
The product could benefit from a bank’s existing channels if a customer wants consolidated statements and familiar approvals. But integration can increase the complexity of the boundaries. A corporate user may need one set of permissions to move cash, another to instruct a blockchain transfer, and another to approve a tokenized security settlement. The bank’s product page mentions Autobahn access and customizable transfer approvals, yet does not publish a common workflow for all three activities. A case study of the first client could show whether those products actually share an operational path.
The first client will clarify the product more than a roadmap
The strongest evidence for the bank’s near launch is the combination of its dated September release, a live product description and the October executive interview. They agree that corporate and institutional custody in Germany is the first stage. The sources do not give the same level of detail about timing for each stablecoin, conversion service, bond issuance capability or Asia expansion. A forecast of weeks can slip if a regulatory step, operational test or customer onboarding takes longer than expected.
The initial launch should answer questions a fund or corporate treasurer could act on without guessing. Which entity signs the custody agreement? Which assets are accepted into a production wallet on that date? What instructions can a customer give through Autobahn? Which transfers are permitted to an external address? How are chain incidents, forks and recovery handled? Are stablecoin redemption and fiat conversion live services or later phases? The bank has described controls but not published a first-client transaction that answers all of them.
Customer asset figures, if eventually reported, would need an equally precise definition. A custody balance at a particular date shows what the bank held at that moment; it does not measure payments made, tokenized bonds issued or trading revenue earned. Market values of Bitcoin and Ether can change without a single deposit or withdrawal, so a rise in the dollar value of assets held could be price driven. Coin units, net inflows and active client counts would separate asset movements from valuation. The bank has not supplied a launch forecast for any of these measures.
An announced custodian and an active custodian can be separated with a simple evidence hierarchy. A bank statement of intent sits first. Regulatory completion and an effective client contract follow. An asset received into an operational customer account establishes use. A third-party transfer or redemption demonstrates functionality beyond storage. Customer assets under custody and service fees, if later disclosed, would measure commercial scale. The public record as of October 16 is principally at the intent and product-description stages.
The bank did not provide a launch date in its October interview. Its public product page still says services become available following regulatory completion and technical readiness, while identifying custody and transfer as the initial core services.
