Lionel Messi marked his farewell to Argentina with a goal from the penalty spot and two assists in a 3-0 victory over Benin before 85,000 fans at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.
He ended his 21-year international career with 126 goals, a 2022 World Cup title and two Copa América trophies.
“It was a source of great pride to wear this jersey for over 20 years,” Messi said. “I never stopped fighting, never stopped giving my all. I would love to keep coming back forever, because playing for the Argentine national team is the most beautiful thing that can happen to you.”
Messi received a standing ovation from his emotional teammates, coaching staff led by Lionel Scaloni and the fans.
“I’m going to miss you all. Now I’ll be on your side, supporting the national team and the guys who come next,” Messi promised. “When we’re united, we’re stronger than anyone and can overcome anything. Tough times lie ahead, because what this group achieved won’t be easy to repeat.”
During the game, Nicolás Otamendi opened the scoring in the 48th minute from Messi’s corner, before Messi assisted Nicolás Paz in the 61st minute to score the second goal. Messi then scored a penalty ten minutes later, as fans chanted his name.
At 39 years old, Messi announced his international retirement on August 31, ending his 208-match career with Argentina. He wore a special No. 10 jersey as fans, teammates and opponents honoured him with a standing ovation.
After the match, he thanked his teammates for their achievements together and shared a final message with them: “We need to build a strong, united group be cause there are people who want the national team to fail, and we shouldn’t give them the satisfaction.”
