By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have confirmed that 35-year-old Belize Coast Guard member Lionel Logan has died after being critically injured in a shooting along the Philip Goldson Highway near Carolina Village, Corozal District, on Sunday evening.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith confirmed during Monday’s police press briefing that Logan succumbed to his injuries earlier that day. His death comes less than 24 hours after gunmen opened fire on a vehicle carrying Logan and several other passengers.
Logan, a resident of Libertad Village, was travelling in a black Chevrolet Equinox with 35-year-old Julian Dyer, a construction worker from Corozal Town, and other passengers after leaving a football game in Carolina Village.
According to initial reports, a black van carrying approximately four men pulled alongside their vehicle, and its occupants opened fire, striking Logan and Dyer.
Logan suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including injuries to his abdomen and the back of his head. He was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City, where he remained in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries on Monday.
Dyer sustained injuries to his right forearm and lower abdomen and was treated at the Corozal Community Hospital. A nine-year-old girl travelling in the vehicle also suffered a minor injury reportedly caused by shattered glass.
The bullet-riddled Chevrolet Equinox was subsequently discovered abandoned in the San Antonio Village area.
Police are continuing their investigation into the deadly attack. A motive has not been publicly established, and authorities have not announced any arrests in connection with the shooting.
