Cairo – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi called on parliament Saturday to convene an emergency session to authorize him to intervene in any Saudi Arabia request.
Speaking at a graduation ceremony for new classes from the military academy and colleges, Sisi said, "I call on parliament to hold an emergency session to grant us the authority to take action to defend Saudi Arabia if we are asked to do so."
He added, "This action and defense requires ratification by the Egyptian parliament, and I hope that parliament will hold an emergency session to ratify this authorization. I am not speaking to attack or fight, but rather we seek only to defend."
Sisi explained, "We stand firmly and fully support the protection and defense of our brothers' lands in the Gulf. Egypt will take any action necessary to protect and defend Saudi Arabia."
He continued, "I extend my thanks and appreciation to our brothers in the Gulf for their support of Egypt after 2013."
Earlier, Sisi affirmed the interconnectedness of Egyptian and Saudi national security, as well as the security of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, emphasizing Cairo's rejection of any infringement upon the Kingdom's security and borders, or upon the security of the Red Sea and international maritime routes.
Sisi stated that Egypt and Saudi Arabia represent the heart of the Arab and Islamic nations, and that any harm inflicted upon one affects the other, stressing that targeting the Kingdom threatens both Arab and Egyptian national security. He emphasized the importance of preserving Saudi Arabia's security and stability and working to de-escalate tensions.
