How many players can IPL teams retain for 2027?
There is no limit on how many players a franchise may retain before the mini-auction. The teams are allowed to retain as many players as they wish within the constraints of squad size and composition.
Every franchise may have a squad consisting of up to 25 players, which may include up to eight foreign players. The team has to release the players when they feel the need to make space for new players.
The rule for retaining six players and the Right to Match (RTM) for the 2025 mega-auction does not automatically translate to the mini-auction in 2027.
What happens after the IPL retention deadline?
Upon submission of the retention lists, players who are released by the franchises will qualify for the auction pool depending on the relevant registration rules.
The budget that the franchises will use for the auction process will be set out under the league regulations as well as the funds that the teams have dedicated for their retained players.
Furthermore, player transfer processes can be conducted within the trading window period. This window period will close one week before the auction and open one week after it, until one month before the beginning of the season.
Thus, the November 15 retention deadline date becomes an important milestone for the teams planning to finalise their team arrangements before the December auction.
