Christmas at the Botanics has become one of Edinburgh’s must-visit Christmas experiences - attracting 750,00 visitors since 2016 from across Scotland and beyond, as Graham Walker has been finding out.
Twinkling lights, festive magic and memories to last a lifetime.
Christmas at the Botanics has become a highlight of Scotland’s festive calendar, drawing families, couples and friends to Edinburgh for a spectacular night out in one of the capital’s most beautiful settings.
Now the spectacular and much-loved after-dark trail is preparing to shine brighter than ever as it celebrates its landmark 10th anniversary at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, from November 19 to December 30.

For thousands of visitors, Christmas at the Botanics has become more than a night out – it is part of their Christmas tradition.
It will transform the Garden once again with sparkling illuminations, historic botanical art, remarkable trees and returning festive favourites.
And this year, the Garden’s extraordinary history will become part of the show.

Historic illustrations from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh’s archive will be brought dramatically to life through art, animation and light, while 10 remarkable trees from its living collection will be highlighted along the route to celebrate a decade of Christmas at the Botanics.
Returning favourites will include the iconic Christmas Cathedral – the backdrop to countless festive photographs over the past decade – and, of course, Father Christmas himself.
At the heart of this year’s trail will be a breathtaking projection across Inverleith House, created by innovative design studio NOVAK.
Botanical illustrations from the Garden’s archive will be transformed into huge luminous forms through light and animation, creating a spectacular fusion of nature, art and history.

The projection will feature illustrations from the work of Pierre-Antoine Poiteau and Joseph Jacob von Plenck, allowing visitors to see part of the Garden’s rich botanical heritage as they have never experienced it before.
And to celebrate its first decade, several crowd-pleasing installations will return with a fresh look.
Pealit Tree, created by Culture Creative, will dress the Garden’s impressive Japanese Wingnut in frosty white pea lights, glistening against the darkness of the winter sky.
Flowing Stream of Light, also from Culture Creative, will create a sweeping stream of dynamic, colour-changing pixels and a spectacular ripple effect beside the pathway.

And Studio Vertigo’s Light Sphere will bring another burst of colour, with its luminous geometric shapes reflected in the Pond.
Hosted in the Garden’s demonstration kitchen, guests can enjoy a special festive menu before wrapping up and heading outside to experience the illuminated trail.
Whether it is a family Christmas tradition, a romantic festive date night, an evening with friends or a first visit to Edinburgh’s winter spectacular, Christmas at the Botanics is all about sharing an experience – and making memories together.
After 10 years of lighting up winter nights, its magic continues.
