Seven-Eleven said on the 18th that it will begin selling 360-milliliter bottles of Captain Q, a Korean-made liquor returning after 11 years, from the 21st, alongside a related promotion.
Captain Q is a liquor brand launched by Lotte Chilsung Beverage in 1980. Backed by its rich flavor and low price, it sold more than 10 million bottles within a year of its debut. With an alcohol content of 35%, the strong spirit became the subject of a running joke among drinkers at the time, who said it was "liquor with no hangover because you don't wake up until two days later."
After being discontinued in 2015, it was remembered as a "legendary liquor" over the following 11 years and drew steady consumer interest. The relaunched product preserves the original bottle, cap and label designs to emphasize its retro appeal. It is made with 99% Caribbean rum and aged in bourbon casks and Spanish Pedro Ximenez casks. The price is 9,900 won per bottle.
Searches for Captain Q on Seven-Eleven's mobile application, Seven App, topped 300,000 between the 9th and the 16th of this month, accounting for 15% of all inventory-search queries during the period, the company said. A special package set released on the 14th, called the Captain Q Treasure Box, sold out its prepared volume within a day.
To mark the official relaunch, Seven-Eleven is running an 11-day special promotion through the 31st offering a 20% discount to customers paying with Woori Card.
"Captain Q, back after about 10 years, is expected to offer middle-aged and older consumers a wistful sense of nostalgia and younger generations fresh curiosity and enjoyment, carrying on the popularity of the value-for-money high-proof liquor market," an official at Seven-Eleven said.
