Television actor Arjun Bijlani and his wife, Neha Swami, have issued a clarification and apologised after a T-shirt worn by Neha sparked controversy on social media for featuring Urdu text referring to Prophet Muhammad.
The couple said Neha was unaware of the meaning of the words printed on the garment and had no intention of hurting religious sentiments.
In a statement shared on Arjun’s Instagram Stories on Wednesday, the couple explained that the T-shirt had been gifted to Neha by a fan during their visit to a mall in Bangkok. Since they did not understand the writing on it, they were unaware of its religious significance when she wore it.
“There was absolutely no intention to hurt, disrespect or offend the religious sentiments of any individual or community,” the statement read. The couple added that they respect all religions, faiths and beliefs and would never knowingly do anything to offend others.
The controversy erupted after Neha was spotted wearing the T-shirt at the birthday party of actor Kunal Verma and actor Puja Banerjee’s son in Mumbai. Pictures of the outfit subsequently circulated online, drawing criticism over the religious text featured on it.
The couple also expressed concern over the online abuse directed at Neha, condemning the trolling, abusive comments and threats she had received. They said that a lack of awareness should not become a reason to subject someone to online harassment.
“We are sorry for what happened unintentionally and we will always be careful in future with regards to the gifts received,” the statement added.
Arjun and Neha urged people to approach the situation with sensitivity and compassion and refrain from targeting Neha and her family. The controversy also drew a response from Pakistani actor Mishi Khan, who criticised the outfit and called for a public apology.
