The Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) believes that there is an emergent need to reform the Election Commission of India (ECI) in order to restore people’s faith in democracy, said the party leader G.K. Vasan in Krishnagiri on Wednesday (October 14, 2026). It was imperative that the ECI be restructured given the erosion of faith in the fairness of elections, said Mr. Vasan, whose party was in alliance with the NDA government until a few months ago.
Speaking to the media as part of an event, Mr. Vasan also advocated for the TVK government in its handling of electricity crisis.
Asked about the hike in the cost of purchase per unit of power from ₹21 to ₹35, Mr. Vasan said that it was a result of the rise in demand, and endorsed the Tamil Nadu Energy Resources Minister’s statement. However, when asked whether this would increase the State’s loan burden, Mr. Vasan deflected the question, saying that the government was addressing people’s concerns 'step by step,' which was evident in its setting up an expert committee. Regarding the inflation in the price of commodities, Mr. Vasan said that it was within the range of containment and that the government has been functioning in the best possible way to address public concerns.
