Part two of the Buffalo Bills sojourn through America’s southwest continues Sunday afternoon when they head to Las Vegas to take on the Raiders at Allegiant Stadium, a place where the Bills have played only once, and it was in front of no fans in the Covid year of 2020.
The Bills arrived in Los Angeles last Sunday afternoon, then defeated the Rams at SoFi Stadium the next night, 37-34 in overtime. Rather than fly all the way home immediately after the game like they normally would, they opted to stay on the West Coast for the week.
They checked into a hotel in Newport Beach, California which is about five miles from the campus of the University of California, Irvine, home of the Anteaters, where they have been practicing ahead of their game against the Raiders who are off to a somewhat surprising 3-2 start under their own first-year head coach Klint Kubiak.
Brady said the organization made the decision to stay out west because the Rams game was a Monday nighter, and flying back to Buffalo and then coming right back to Las Vegas five days later would have been a grind for the players.
“Flying back there, you're getting in late, there's a recovery component of it and there's a physical component, and then having to fly all the way back here,” Brady said. “Look, it happens and teams do it. I'm fortunate, Mr. Pegula was all about it. And now it's about our guys taking advantage of that recovery and making sure that they're doing things.
“They're taking advantage of as much opportunity they have of living in the training room doing what we have to do. They played a lot of plays the other day, but there's no excuse. No one cares come Sunday. And so that to me is the most important thing, the recovery component.”
The last time the Bills did this was 2012, Chan Gailey’s final season as head coach. They played at San Francisco and got walloped 45-3, then stayed on the left coast for their game against the Cardinals in Phoenix and it paid dividends as they won 19-16.
There was another benefit to staying out west for the week, similar to that of training camp at St. John Fisher University.
“Being away and then we're all in the hotel together or the guys are watching tape together, they're growing together, they’re eating together, they're doing that stuff from a training camp perspective,” Brady said. “So I hope there is growth from our team.
“But at the end of the day our job here is to come win, prepare what we got to do here, get on the plane (to Las Vegas) and try and find a way to go 1-0 this week.”
