SHILLONG, Oct 15: Opposition MDCs in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Thursday flagged the dilapidated condition of the MDC Hostel, citing leaking rooms, rat infestations and poor sanitation. The issue was raised during the Question Hour of the Council’s winter session.
Mairang-Nongkhlaw MDC Equator L. Nongrang detailed the hardships faced by residents, claiming he had to use an umbrella even when stepping just outside his room during rainfall. He further complained about the presence of large rats within the premises.
Opposition Leader Titosstarwell Chyne, along with Ricky Shullai (Laban-Mawprem) and Grace Mary Kharpuri (Nongshken), joined the chorus of concern, highlighting the lack of basic cleanliness and hygiene at the residential complex.
Replying to the queries, KHADC Executive Member in-charge of Finance, Seiborlang Warbah, informed the House that Rs 10 lakh has been earmarked for the repair and maintenance of the hostel under the 2026-27 budget.
Warbah stated that work is expected to commence next month and expressed hope that the renovation would resolve the pest issue.
KHADC CEM Winston Tony Lyngdoh added that a total of Rs 1 crore has been set aside for the overall improvement and renovation of both the Council’s office premises and the hostel.
