The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has urged the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) to conduct its October 15, 2026 election in a free, fair, transparent and credible manner, warning that the integrity of the process will be critical to building confidence in the federation’s leadership and advancing the development of basketball in the country.
The association said the election should be conducted in strict compliance with the NBBF constitution and relevant electoral regulations, with equal opportunities for all eligible aspirants and stakeholders to participate in accordance with established rules. Blueprint reports
SWAN President, Isaiah Benjamin, made the call in a statement signed by the association’s Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, on Wednesday, October 14.
Benjamin stressed that a transparent electoral process would provide a stronger foundation for effective administration, accountability and sustainable growth of Nigerian basketball.
SWAN insists on transparency, equal opportunity
The SWAN president urged the NBBF to ensure that the procedures governing the election were clearly communicated to all relevant stakeholders before the exercise.
He maintained that eligible participants should be allowed to exercise their rights under the applicable rules without discrimination, adding that fairness and openness were essential to ensuring that the outcome of the election commanded the confidence of the basketball community.
According to him, the federation’s commitment to its constitution and established electoral guidelines would be important in demonstrating that the process was conducted in a manner that respected the interests of all concerned.
Benjamin said the election should not be viewed merely as a contest for positions but as an opportunity to reinforce the institutional structures required to move Nigerian basketball forward.
He noted that confidence in sports administration depends partly on the credibility of the processes through which leaders emerge, particularly in federations responsible for managing athletes, competitions and development programmes.
The SWAN president therefore called on the NBBF and all parties involved to place the collective interest of the sport above individual ambitions, stressing that a credible process would help create an atmosphere conducive to cooperation after the election.
Stakeholders urged to maintain peace
Benjamin also appealed to candidates, delegates and other stakeholders to approach the electoral process with maturity, restraint and mutual respect.
He said all parties should embrace peaceful engagement before, during and after the election, warning against conduct capable of undermining the unity of the basketball community.
The SWAN president emphasised that disagreements associated with electoral contests should be managed through established procedures rather than actions that could create unnecessary tension among stakeholders.
He said the future of Nigerian basketball should remain the overriding consideration for everyone involved in the process, regardless of the eventual outcome.
“An election conducted in an atmosphere of fairness, transparency and accountability will strengthen confidence in the federation and reinforce the collective commitment of stakeholders to the growth of Nigerian basketball. The interest of the game must remain paramount before, during and after the election,” Benjamin said.
The association’s position comes as the NBBF prepares to elect its leadership, a process expected to shape the direction of basketball administration and development in the country.
SWAN said the credibility of the exercise would be important not only to those contesting positions but also to players, coaches, clubs, administrators and other stakeholders whose interests are tied to the federation’s decisions.
Association seeks stronger relationship with NBBF
Beyond the election, SWAN expressed its readiness to establish a more structured and productive working relationship with the NBBF to improve the promotion, visibility and overall development of basketball in Nigeria.
Benjamin said professional cooperation between sports administrators and journalists was essential to communicating policies, publicising competitions and showcasing the achievements of Nigerian players, coaches and teams.
He noted that effective media engagement could help the federation communicate its programmes more clearly, attract wider public attention to basketball and create greater awareness of opportunities within the sport.
The association also maintained that timely access to accurate information would support responsible reporting and enable journalists to provide audiences with a clearer understanding of the federation’s activities and the progress of Nigerian basketball.
SWAN proposed regular media briefings, prompt access to credible information and collaborative initiatives aimed at improving basketball coverage at grassroots, national and international levels.
Such engagement, the association said, would help journalists report more comprehensively on competitions, development programmes and the performances of Nigerian teams and athletes.
Media partnership seen as key to basketball development
The association further highlighted the role of the media in promoting basketball beyond match reports and tournament results, noting that sustained coverage could help bring greater attention to emerging talent, grassroots competitions and the achievements of Nigerian players competing at home and abroad.
A more consistent flow of information from the federation would also help journalists communicate developments to supporters, sponsors and the wider public, while creating opportunities for informed discussions about the sport’s administration and future.
Benjamin said SWAN was prepared to work professionally with the NBBF in ways that would serve the interests of both organisations and contribute to the growth of basketball.
“SWAN is committed to a professional and mutually beneficial relationship with the NBBF that recognises the strategic role of the media in sports development,” he said.
“We believe that open communication and constructive collaboration will help tell the Nigerian basketball story more effectively, celebrate our athletes and create greater opportunities for the sport to attract public and private-sector support,” he added.
The association said the proposed partnership should be built on openness, professionalism and mutual respect, with the media retaining its responsibility to report developments accurately while the federation makes credible information available to journalists.
SWAN reiterates commitment to sports development
The association’s intervention places the forthcoming election and the relationship between the federation and the media within the broader discussion about accountability and development in Nigerian sports.
By calling for an electoral process guided by established rules, SWAN said it hoped to see a leadership transition that strengthens confidence in the NBBF and provides a stable platform for basketball administration.
Its proposed media partnership also reflects the association’s position that sports development requires cooperation among administrators, journalists, athletes, coaches and other stakeholders.
