A joke about Brady’s winning record
During his postgame comments, Mahomes joked that he had been hearing about the comparison since he was approaching 100 wins. He wondered aloud when Brady had lost another game because each new victory seemed to bring him level with the former quarterback again.
The remark reflected the unusual statistical connection between their careers. Mahomes then returned to the significance of the achievement, emphasizing that being associated with Brady was special.

Mahomes delivers 272 passing yards
Mahomes completed 23 of 30 passes against the Chargers, recording 272 passing yards during the victory. He also threw one interception, finishing the game without a passing touchdown.
His passing total was his second-highest single-game figure of the 2026 season at that point. The performance helped Kansas City secure its fifth consecutive win, even without a touchdown pass from its starting quarterback.

Kansas City’s defense limits the Chargers
Kansas City’s defense contributed significantly to the victory by restricting Los Angeles to six points. The Chiefs recorded four sacks against Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, ending a three-week stretch without a sack.
The defense also forced Los Angeles to turn the ball over on downs three times. These stops limited the Chargers’ scoring opportunities and helped Kansas City protect its lead throughout the contest.

Brady’s record remains a major benchmark
Tom Brady reached 100 regular-season wins as a starting quarterback in 131 starts, setting the pace Mahomes has now matched. Brady spent much of his career with the New England Patriots before finishing his playing career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Brady won seven Super Bowl championships during his NFL career, the most by any player. His achievements provide important context for Mahomes’ milestone, although reaching 100 wins at the same pace does not mean their careers will end with identical records.
Interesting fact: Tom Brady was selected 199th overall in the 2000 NFL Draft.

Mahomes has led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl championships, adding postseason success to his regular-season achievements. Kansas City won Super Bowl LIV after the 2019 season, Super Bowl LVII after the 2022 season and Super Bowl LVIII after the 2023 season.
He also earned Super Bowl MVP honors in all three victories. Those accomplishments distinguish his career from a record based solely on regular-season wins and help explain why comparisons with Brady continue to attract attention.

Mahomes became Kansas City’s starter in 2018
Mahomes became the Chiefs’ starting quarterback in 2018 after spending his rookie season behind veteran quarterback Alex Smith. In his first season as the starter, Mahomes threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns during the regular season.
That campaign earned him the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award for the 2018 season. His early success helped establish the foundation for the winning record he reached in October 2026.

Andy Reid and Mahomes share another milestone
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and Mahomes have built a successful partnership since Mahomes took over as the team’s starting quarterback. Their collaboration has included three Super Bowl championships and multiple strong regular-season campaigns.
Kansas City’s 5-0 start in 2026 also placed Reid and Mahomes among a small group of head coach-quarterback duos to record at least three separate 5-0 starts. The Chiefs’ official review of the Chargers game identified previous examples involving Bill Belichick and Brady, Tony Dungy and Peyton Manning, and Bud Grant and Fran Tarkenton.

The Chiefs prepare for Seattle
Kansas City’s next scheduled game after the Chargers victory is against the Seattle Seahawks on October 25, 2026. The matchup offers Mahomes and the Chiefs another opportunity to extend their unbeaten start to the regular season.
Maintaining that record will require the team to continue to produce on both offense and defense. Mahomes’ 100th win marks a notable career milestone, but the Chiefs’ immediate objective remains to win their next game.
