New Delhi: The Tripura Students Forum Delhi (TSFD) has approached the Delhi Police seeking the registration of an FIR and an impartial investigation into an alleged incident of sexual assault, racial harassment and public humiliation involving a person from Tripura, reportedly depicted in a viral social media video.
The complaint was submitted to the Joint Commissioner of Police heading the Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region (SPUNER), Delhi Police. The forum has sought urgent action against those allegedly involved in the incident.
According to the complaint, a video circulating on Instagram allegedly shows a person from Tripura being subjected to sexual assault, harassment and degrading treatment by a social media content creator. The forum identified the Instagram account involved as @amirshokeen, purportedly associated with an individual named Amir Shokeen.
The student body alleged that the video contains racially derogatory expressions, including “Chinki” and “Chiness”, directed at the person to demean their ethnic and regional identity.
“Such expressions, when used to demean or humiliate a person on account of their perceived ethnic or regional identity, raise serious concerns about racial prejudice, dignity and equal treatment,” the complaint stated.
The forum also objected to an allegedly derogatory reference to Tripura in the video, saying the remarks had caused distress among members of the state’s community and amounted to an affront to its dignity and reputation.
Forum Seeks FIR, Preservation of Digital Evidence
In its representation, TSFD urged the police to register an FIR and conduct an impartial investigation into the alleged assault and racial abuse.
The forum also called for verification of the identity and role of the person operating the social media account, along with others who may have been involved in recording or facilitating the incident.
It further requested that the alleged victim be contacted through a safe and confidential process so that their statement could be recorded sensitively. The complaint also sought the preservation of electronic evidence, including the original video, metadata and the platform’s upload history.
The office of the Joint Commissioner of Police-cum-Nodal Officer for the North-East Region has formally received the complaint. Further action by the police is awaited.
Kiren Rijiju Condemns Alleged Incident
Meanwhile, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju condemned the alleged racial harassment and assault, stating that the person responsible should face legal consequences.
In a post on X, Rijiju said the Delhi Police and Tripura Police were coordinating to take action against the alleged perpetrator.
“This evil man will be punished. There was a delay in lodging the official complaint, but Delhi Police and Tripura Police will teach him a hard lesson. People who tolerate such wicked behaviour in society are also responsible for the spread of hatred,” Rijiju wrote.
His remarks followed the formal complaint lodged by TSFD with the Delhi Police’s SPUNER unit.
