Forget the iPad. When it comes to a writing tablet, we’ve long been fans of reMarkable’s products—for us this is the brand of tablet to get if you’re dedicated to writing. The Paper Pure delivers a lightweight tablet with reMarkable’s best black-and-white contrast yet, while hitting a price point that can’t be beat. The 10.3-inch screen is the sweet spot, giving room for more creative endeavors but not sacrificing portability.
If you’re spending your time writing, sketching, or annotating, this is the tablet to get. Writing on it with reMarkable’s marker feels great, not quite like real paper but the best alternative we have. For everything from work notes to making to-do lists, having a tactile option makes organizing and remembering what you wrote easier.
If you prefer items that can multitask, you might want something that can better double as an e-reader. This is where the Kindle Scribe comes to the party. The 11-inch Paperwhite display is as suited for reading a book from your Kindle library as it is for marking up a proposal or editing a document. Writing on it feels good, feedback is quick and responsive, and the interface is the most newbie friendly if you’ve never owned one of these (especially if you have owned a Kindle). Plus, it has an adjustable front light—the one thing the Paper Pure lacks.

We’ve just gone to lengths to describe the virtues of the Kindle Scribe. Now you can have all that, only in Technicolor. Jokes aside, this addition makes the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft the best and most versatile color e-ink device we’ve used. The choice (and you can’t go wrong wither either) between a graphite or fig color for the back and bezel also makes it the best-looking one.
This takes what we love about the reMarkable Paper Pro tablet and shrinks it down from notebook size to notepad size. The Paper Pro Move rocks a compact 7.3-inch screen, but it still has a color display. Perfect for the jacket pocket or slightly sticking out of your shirt’s front pocket if you’re going for that old-school reporter vibe. It even comes with the Marker Plus, which lets you use the eraser to naturally fix mistakes, elevating the writing experience even further.
Do all the reMarkable stuff you’re used to. Take notes, write on documents, and send those out wherever you want without needing to pick up your phone or another device. And yes, this one has an adjustable light screen for when you’re trying to get some late-night work done.

This dark-horse pick from Boox is a serious contender if you’re using this as a work tablet. If you’re here, you love handwriting, but sometimes in a pinch it’s faster to type. That’s why you can connect a keyboard directly via the magnetic pin (what you’ll typically find on a hybrid tablet like the Microsoft Surface) when you just want to go laptop mode. We’ve also seen some real life hackers on Reddit connect a mouse and keyboard with Bluetooth, but results may vary.
The limitations of the e-ink screen will prevent you from using it as an effective browser, but for quickly editing and organizing notes, typing is faster than writing for many people. And it’s a full-color display, so you can highlight to your heart’s content.
