KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia's benchmark index extended its decline to close below the 1,600 support level as persistent foreign selling weighed on banking heavyweights, said an analyst.
At 5pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) trimmed 12.01 points, or 0.74 per cent, to 1,595.75 from Friday's close of 1,607.76.
The benchmark index, which opened 3.58 points lower at 1,604.18, moved between 1,593.37 and 1,604.65 throughout the trading session.
On the broader market, decliners outnumbered gainers 741 to 322, while 482 counters were unchanged, 1,299 untraded and 35 suspended.
Turnover fell to RM2.49 billion units worth RM2.38 billion from last Friday's 3.13 billion units worth RM3.27 billion.
For banking counters, Public Bank erased 12 sen to RM4.71, Maybank shed nine sen to RM9.90, CIMB eased five sen to RM7.15, AMMB Holdings slipped 16 sen to RM6.19, and RHB Bank went down 12 sen to RM7.20.
Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said the equities broker remained cautious, as the sharp sell-off in the domestic market and the FBM KLCI's fall below the 1,600-point level suggested that near-term selling pressure had yet to subside.
Nevertheless, he noted that the correction had brought valuations of selected Malaysian blue-chip stocks to more attractive levels, particularly companies with strong fundamentals, resilient earnings and sustainable dividend yields.
"We believe that this presents opportunities for gradual accumulation once selling pressure begins to ease, rather than signalling a deterioration in the broader domestic economic outlook," he told Bernama.
For the remainder of the week, Rakuten Trade expects the benchmark index to remain volatile, with immediate support at 1,590, followed by 1,580, while a recovery above the 1,600–1,610 range would be necessary to restore market confidence.
"As such, we anticipate the FBM KLCI to trade within the 1,580–1,610 range this week, with selective bargain hunting potentially cushioning further downside," said Thong.
Among other heavyweights, Press Metal jumped 18 sen to RM6.68, YTL Power advanced 11 sen to RM5.26, SD Guthrie improved three sen to RM5.72, while TNB gave up two sen to RM12.98 and IHH Healthcare shaved off 10 sen to RM7.90.
