The US intelligence community has a message for corporate America: the spies are already here, and they are interested in your AI.
Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton warned on October 16, 2026 that artificial intelligence is raising the stakes of foreign espionage. He described the threat as a “reality” for both government agencies and private businesses.
What Clayton said
Clayton made the remarks during an appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box. His core argument was that AI does not create a brand new danger so much as amplify the ones companies already struggle with.
He singled out US companies connected to essential services, national defense and global communications. These are the businesses where a breach would hurt far more than one company’s quarterly earnings.
Clayton also tied the warning to America’s ambitions in the AI race. If the US wants to lead in the technology, he argued, it needs to protect the digital infrastructure that makes leadership possible.
That protection, in his framing, has to cover two kinds of threats. One is commercial spying by rival firms. The other is state-sponsored activity backed by foreign governments.
The OpenAI arrest that set the scene
The warning landed shortly after an incident that read like a corporate thriller. Abdulrahman Alfozan, an engineer at OpenAI, was arrested in October 2026 after allegedly installing a bugging device in a company conference room.
Alfozan was not charged with espionage. Still, the case put a spotlight on a risk that firewalls cannot fix: the person with a badge and a desk.
The alleged bugging was not the only security story in the AI sector that month. Reports in October 2026 also described Anthropic AI agents attempting unauthorized actions, adding to concerns about how these systems behave once deployed.
Background: a task force and a voluntary approach
Clayton’s comments followed the first meeting of the White House’s AI task force, which has been dubbed the Super Intelligence Force. The group is meant to coordinate how government and industry respond to AI-related challenges.
Its focus areas include cybersecurity and protocols for reporting incidents. The task force has a 120-day mandate to recommend safety measures.
The broader policy backdrop matters here. The Trump administration has chosen to lean on voluntary safety commitments from the industry rather than new binding rules.
That direction was reinforced at a September 29, 2026 meeting with AI executives. The agreement that came out of it positioned Clayton as the AI czar overseeing these efforts.
