After a 7-year corporate stint, Tanveer found his love for writing and tech too much to resist. An MBA in Marketing and the owner of a PC building business, he writes on PC hardware, technology, and Windows. When not scouring the web for ideas, he can be found building PCs, watching anime, or playing Smash Karts on his RTX 3080 (sigh).
Over the last 20 years, I've built more than a few gaming PCs. I can freely admit that every single time, I've let a component's specifications affect my decision more than its real-world performance. Sometimes it was CPU clock speeds or GPU cores; other times, it was monitor response times or motherboard marketing fluff. With time, however, I've learned to look deeper, ignoring superficial technical specs in favor of reliable, third-party reviews that reveal a component's actual performance. The next time I build a PC, these are the specs I'm glossing over.
Monitor: Peak brightness
The peak of misleading marketing
In today's age of high-performance OLED and IPS monitors, peak brightness is perhaps the most abused term when it comes to monitor marketing. Brands advertise record-breaking peak brightness numbers every year in the hopes of converting customers who are on the fence. After all, if all the monitors on a customer's shortlist boast a similar spec sheet, a better peak brightness number is enough to away gullible users. Before you drop a grand on that 1200-nit monitor, find out how bright it gets in full-screen scenes.
Yes, the peak brightness number is almost always related to a 1% or 2% window on the screen. It's a helpful metric to compare the general quality of several panels, but it doesn't represent how the monitor will look in any real-world scenario. The actual, i.e., 100% window brightness, will often be only 20–30% of the peak brightness figure. This number is what truly shows how bright your monitor will look during a game or movie. This is why it's important to consult third-party reviews before making your decision solely based on the brand's claims. Of course, a monitor with sky-high peak brightness will also have a decent 100% window brightness, but you can't make an informed decision without comparing some real-world numbers.
Motherboard: Wi-Fi 7
Out of 6 useless features on your motherboard, this should be the 7th
In the PC hardware world, many standards evolve faster than the tech needed to support them. It happened with PCIe 5.0, and the story of Wi-Fi 7 is quite similar. Even in 2025, most people are still using Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 6 routers and devices. In fact, I've still not switched from my Wi-Fi 5 router — the real-world benefits just don't justify the transition yet. Wi-Fi 7 has become popular on mid-range and high-end motherboards, but it doesn't matter to the vast majority of people. Wi-Fi 6E already achieves everything PC users need from a wireless network, and Ethernet is still the preferred solution anyway.
Paying extra for a motherboard with Wi-Fi 7 is absurd right now. By the time Wi-Fi 7 routers become affordable and commonplace, you might already have upgraded your motherboard to something else. The Wi-Fi 8 specifications are already being worked on, but we're still debating whether Wi-Fi 7 is overkill. No doubt it will improve signal throughput, latency, and reliability, but those are niche benefits if you're already on Wi-Fi 6E. Many affordable motherboards still provide only Wi-Fi 6 capabilities, but they're more than enough for your gaming PC.
Motherboard: Number of VRM phases
Board vendors will sell you anything
Source: Asus
Your motherboard's VRM design matters whether you're overclocking your CPU or not. It determines how effectively your motherboard can supply clean and reliable power to your processor, memory, and a bunch of other components. Buying a motherboard with a dependable VRM solution is essential, but the number of VRM phases doesn't tell the full picture. For one, motherboard manufacturers often market double the number of true phases present on a motherboard. Second, more than the number of VRM phases, the current layout and heatsink quality determine how good the VRMs really are.
If a 16-phase VRM with a terrible heatsink can't keep itself from throttling during an all-core test, it's a useless motherboard. The power stages (in amps) and the cooling capabilities of the VRM are things you can only find out in third-party reviews. For simplicity, 12 true phases (no phase doubler nonsense) with 60A-70A power stages and quality finned heatsinks are all that most gamers ever need. Enthusiasts can go for 16-phase VRMs with power stages rated over 70A. The next time you're comparing motherboards, don't just look at the VRM phase count — it's all in the details.
GPU: AI TOPS
Top of the AI marketing fluff list
You'd be forgiven for not knowing what TOPS really is; after all, Nvidia is more excited about it than any gamer will ever be. TOPS, or trillions of operations per second, is a theoretical metric of the AI performance of a GPU (or CPU). During the RTX 50 series launch, Nvidia went overboard with all the marketing surrounding the AI chops of its Blackwell GPUs, so much so that one of the slides actually put the TOPS numbers next to the prices of the four SKUs. AI TOPS might matter to professionals or enthusiasts, but all gamers care about is the generational uplift.
Instead of going into the rasterization gains over the RTX 40 series, Nvidia spent most of the time marketing its Multi Frame Generation feature, and how its AI innovations led to it. When third-party benchmarks unveiled the downsides of AI-generated frames on such a scale, no one cared about the AI TOPS; everyone criticized the lack of generational gains and the deceptive marketing. Nvidia has been an AI chipmaker more than a gaming GPU maker for a while now, but the RTX 50 series launch marked the official transition.
CPU: Boost clock
Stop obsessing over technical peaks
The boost clock of your CPU is like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. For all intents and purposes in the real world, it doesn't exist. The boost frequency can only be sustained under ideal conditions, something a PC gamer will never achieve. Even when your processor touches this peak, it doesn't stay there for long. In real-world conditions, sustaining boost clocks for any appreciable amount of time takes an unreasonable degree of cooling chops and ideal power limits. These prerequisites are as impossible to achieve as they are unnecessary.
To maximize your CPU performance for gaming, all you should care about is the all-core peak frequency, which is always several hundred MHz lower than the single-core boost clock. This peak frequency that you see in CPU marketing doesn't concern use cases like gaming or productivity. When your CPU is leveraging multiple cores at once, the chances of reaching, let alone sustaining, the advertised boost clock, are basically zero. Your CPU's power limits and thermal limits are guardrails that already prevent your chip from reaching the advertised boost clock.
When you're buying a CPU, check reviews for real gaming benchmarks, power efficiency, and overclocking headroom instead of being swayed by theoretical numbers.
PC building is often about what to ignore
When you're building a new PC, the number of component specs you need to look at can be overwhelming. Thankfully, many of the specs used in PC marketing are little more than impressive numbers that mean little in the real world. Once you know what to look out for and what to ignore, it becomes easier to pick truly quality products. The next time you're buying a CPU, GPU, motherboard, or monitor, you should know which technical specs you should ignore.
