Even if you weren't already convinced that AI has introduced a new era of computing, you could likely be convinced that AI-powered reverse engineering and cybersecurity will never be the same. And Microsoft can't stop breaking its own Patch Tuesday high scores, this time addressing 1,413 vulnerabilities, bugs, or exploits patched across Windows 11. September's total was 974, and July (the previous record-setter) was a "mere" 570.
Of the 1413 bugs smashed by Patch Tuesday October 2026, three were zero-day vulnerabilities, one of which was a Windows Shell Security Feature Bypass that was already being actively exploited (CVE-2026-96951). As always, we firmly recommend applying security updates as soon as possible, and of course that process should involve backups and strong organizational support for enterprise users.
While this ever-increasing number is obviously good news, I can't help but envision Microsoft's cybersecurity as hunting for exploits with the same fervor of an arcade game fanatic. AI is obviously helping, but these results still require lots of oversight and investment. For a cybercrook, trying to use old exploits against updated, AI-assisted systems must feel a bit like being outmatched on the same arcade machine.
But that doesn't mean Microsoft, or really anyone in the cybersecurity world, can afford to rest on their laurels. As impressive as these Patch Tuesday numbers are, they also reflect the frightening degree of pre-emptive patching required to protect against a new era of AI worms and other vermin and faster threat development. There's also the matter of bad actors like Nightmare-Eclipse, that can use AI to accelerate the development of new Windows vulnerabilities.
And Microsoft isn't the only big tech company boosting its cybersecurity efforts with AI. Adobe, Cisco, Dell, and GitLab have all released numerous security patches this month. For efforts on a similar scale to Microsoft's, the number of vulnerabilities addressed in Google's Chrome updates has also been rising.
That said, I don't want to diminish the victory these numbers reflect for Microsoft and the industry at large, and hopefully the trend will continue. However, the same tools are in use by cybercriminals to create new exploits and most of these measures can only be pre-emptive or corrective.
The "high score" of security vulnerabilities patched this week by Microsoft should remind you that the numbers may never be high enough. In terms of cybersecurity, it doesn't matter how many vulnerabilities you have patched if the one they get you with hasn't been documented or can't be detected yet.
Cheers to Microsoft for keeping up the good work.
