Nebraska 3-UCLA 0: 25-19, 25-11, 25-16
The Huskers are hosting the California teams this weekend at Devaney and are giving them a little taste of home with the warmer temperatures that have been around this week. First up this weekend was the UCLA Bruins. A team who has been hot lately with a 5-match win streak, and one of those coming against Penn State.
Even though the Bruins have been hot, they hadn’t run into a team like Nebraska yet in B1G play. A team that is complete and has been red hot all season long. The Huskers kind of just took the wind out of their sails tonight with the quick 3-0 sweep of the Bruins.
Nebraska came out of the gates looking like they did in the 1st set of the Purdue match. They had everything under control for the first few points. UCLA got their feet under them after the Huskers’ early push though and went up by 4.
This would be the only points streak they would have though as the Huskers took over the match and looked like they had been working to not be in the same position they were in during the Purdue match last week.
UCLA never passed the 20 point threshold and also only passed 15 points in 2 of the 3 sets. This shows how dominate our defense really is. This included 9 blocks and 48 digs in the match. Laney Choboy had 13 of those digs while Olivia Mauch and Bergen Reilly each had 10 of their own as well.
Nebraska hit over .300% in all 3 sets tonight to end the match with a .380% hitting percentage for the night. They only tallied 11 errors all night. Their serving took a little dip though as they only had 1 ace, but 9 service errors. Their serving might be one of the only negatives tonight.
Some bench players also got to see some court time. Kenna Cogill came into the match for a rally in the 2nd, then again for the last few points of the match. Skyler Pierce also got to play a few rallies in both the 2nd and 3rd. Keri Leimbach and Campbell Flynn both entered at serving subs at different points of the match too.
Andi Jackson and Virginia Adriano both had big matches tonight with 11 and 1o kills, respectively. Jackson hit a whopping .625% on the night and also recorded 6 blocks and 3 digs. Harper Murray followed these two up with 9 kills while Teraya Sigler had 8 of her own.
Manaia Ogbechie didn’t have the greatest night with only 4 kills, but hitting .000% because of 4 errors that she had. She also had 3 blocks though, which tied for 2nd on the team with Murray.
Both Bergen Reilly and Kenna Cogill each had 3 kills and Skyler Pierce finished off the night with a single kill on 4 swings.
The Huskers did a great job at holding off UCLA’s stars, like Maggie Li and Marianna Singletary. They each hit .200% or below and had under 10 kills each on the night. One of their goals was to contain Singletary and they did a pretty good job of that. The Bruins were without one of their best DS/L’s. Lola Schumacher has now missed the last 4 matches with an injury.
The Huskers will be back in action on Saturday night back at the Devaney Center. They will welcome USC with the match beginning at 8:00pm CST on B1G Network.
