RAWALPINDI: A suspect accused of sexually assaulting and murdering his 15-year-old niece was killed in an alleged encounter with a team of the Crime Control Department (CCD) in Rawalpindi, police said.
The suspect, identified as Mumrez Abbasi, a resident of Abbottabad, was killed during an exchange of gunfire near Alamabad Stop, close to Children’s Park, in the jurisdiction of Ratta Amral Police Station.
Two of his alleged accomplices escaped, and a search operation is underway to arrest them.
Police recovered a .30-bore pistol and ammunition from the deceased suspect.
According to the police, the suspect was accused of sexually assaulting and strangling his niece to death a few days earlier.
The girl had left home to attend a madrassa when the suspect allegedly took her to his residence, where he sexually assaulted and subsequently killed her. Her body was later recovered from the suspect’s residence.
Footage reportedly showing the suspect meeting the girl in a street and giving her money before the incident had also surfaced.
A murder case had been registered against the suspect at Pirwadhai Police Station on the complaint of the girl’s father. Three days ago the CCD had been assigned responsibility for investigating the case and apprehending the suspect.
The search for the two alleged accomplices is ongoing.
