The meeting comes amid an intensifying Opposition campaign against the Election Commission of India over allegations of electoral irregularities and the SIR exercise. Monday’s march saw Opposition leaders, activists and civil society members gather in central Delhi in a show of strength before a delegation of INDIA bloc leaders approached the Supreme Court to submit a joint petition, which names Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi as parties. CJP Protest: CJP to launch Rajasthan protest over crackdown on activists
The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has announced plans to launch a major protest in Rajasthan within the next 10 days, claiming that police detained, placed under house arrest and assaulted its members and other activists to prevent them from joining protests in Delhi.
Addressing a press conference in Jaipur, CJP spokesperson Deepak Baliyan alleged that police had harassed party workers and their families. He claimed he was kept under house arrest for four days, with personnel from four police stations deployed outside his residence.
Outfit member Gigraj Jorli alleged that he was detained inside his vehicle on October 10 while travelling to Delhi to participate in a protest. He also claimed that his associate, Surendra, was kept in illegal detention.
Another CJP member, Shashikant, alleged that he and his associate Suraj Meena were detained and beaten at Jaipur's Gandhi Nagar Police Station on October 8. Their phones were confiscated, and they were prevented from seeking legal assistance, he claimed.
The party has appealed to civil society organisations, student groups and other social organisations to join its proposed protest.
