Officers from the Guardia Civil's traffic sub-sector in Málaga are investigating a motorist on suspicion of a road safety offence after he was ... caught travelling at 200 km/h on the A-7 motorway - double the legal limit for that stretch of road.
The incident occurred during a targeted speed enforcement operation on the A-7, when a radar camera fitted to a mobile patrol vehicle detected the car travelling at twice the permitted 100 km/h speed limit.
Criminal penalties and road safety warnings
Following the detection, officers initiated formal proceedings against the driver for an alleged road traffic offence under Article 379.1 of the Spanish criminal code relating to excessive speed.
Under Spanish law, driving at more than 80 km/h over the speed limit on an interurban road carries potential penalties including three to six months in prison, a fine calculated over six to 12 months or 31 to 90 days of community service. Conviction also entails mandatory driving disqualification for between one and four years.
Following the incident, the Guardia Civil's traffic division issued a reminder to motorists that excessive speed drastically reduces driver reaction times, increases braking distances and significantly escalates the severity of traffic accidents.
