Aprilia’s Mandalika Sweep Didn’t Break the MotoGP Title Fight. It Showed How Close It Is

Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez each scored 22 points at the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia. Martin arrived at Mandalika two points ahead, lost the lead on Saturday, took it back on Sunday, and flew out of Lombok two points ahead again. On paper, nothing moved in the MotoGP title fight.

That reading misses what the weekend showed. Aprilia put four bikes in the top four for the first time in its MotoGP history, a tire-pressure problem took a likely Sprint win away from the championship leader, and Marquez still matched Martin point for point on a Ducati that had no answer for the RS-GP on Sunday. With five rounds and 185 points left, starting at Phillip Island this weekend, here is what changed and why it matters.

How this piece works: race results, points and quotes-in-summary come from the official MotoGP classifications and reporting linked at the bottom. Sections and paragraphs marked Analysis are Backfire Racing’s interpretation of those facts.

The Mandalika result, in brief

• Sprint (Oct. 10): Marc Marquez won ahead of Ai Ogura and Fabio Di Giannantonio. Martin finished fourth. Polesitter Raul Fernandez and Marco Bezzecchi crashed out at Turn 1.
• Grand Prix (Oct. 11, 27 laps): Bezzecchi won from Fernandez, Martin, Ogura, Pedro Acosta and Marquez. MotoGP.com described the Aprilia 1-2-3-4 as the manufacturer’s first ever in the premier class.
• Standings after Round 17 of 22: Martin 355, Marquez 353, Bezzecchi 309, Ogura 259, Acosta 258, Di Giannantonio 245, Fernandez 236.

What changed: the lead swapped twice, the gap did not

Marquez’s win at Motegi on Oct. 4 had already cut Martin’s advantage to two points, 333 to 331. At Mandalika, the Sprint flipped it. Martin inherited the lead when Fernandez and Bezzecchi went down at the first corner and built a gap of more than a second, then sat up with four laps to go and lost over two seconds in a single lap, according to MotoGP.com’s Sprint report. Marquez went through. Martin then ran wide and off the track at Turn 15 with three laps left and fell to fourth. Marquez’s 12 points against Martin’s six put the Ducati rider four clear, 343 to 339.

Sunday reversed it. Martin dropped to sixth on the opening lap, recovered to third by lap three and stayed there, never close enough to challenge his Aprilia teammates. Marquez ran third briefly, was passed, and spent the second half of the race in a fight with Acosta before Ogura picked off both of them in the closing laps. Third place paid Martin 16 points; sixth paid Marquez 10. That six-point swing turned a four-point deficit into a two-point lead.

Why it happened

Tire pressure cost Martin Saturday

MotoGP.com’s own video coverage from Saturday attributes Martin’s Sprint slowdown to a technical issue with tire pressure, and says his own mistake then cost him the podium. Crash.net reported the same: Martin lost a probable Sprint win to a tire-pressure problem a day before the Grand Prix.

The rule behind it has been in place since 2022. Front tire pressure must stay above 1.8 bar for at least 30% of a Sprint and 60% of a Grand Prix, and missing that threshold brings a time penalty of eight seconds in a Sprint or 16 seconds in a Grand Prix. A rider running at the front in clean air can see the front pressure fall below the limit, and the usual fix is to back off or tuck in behind another bike to build heat. Acosta did exactly that on Sunday, repeatedly letting Marquez back past him, and afterward described riders as looking “like donkeys,” per Crash.net. Maverick Viñales was handed a 16-second post-race penalty for low pressure; it did not change his finishing position.

Analysis: Martin’s Sprint is the clearest example yet this season of the pressure rule shaping the title fight rather than just the midfield. He did not crash or break down, and he still conceded six points to Marquez in the space of four laps. Michelin’s final season as supplier is not going to fix that before Valencia, so every remaining Saturday carries the same risk for whoever leads early.

Aprilia was simply quicker on Sunday

Fernandez started the Grand Prix from his maiden MotoGP pole despite broken fingers from Saturday’s crash, held off Bezzecchi’s first attack at Turn 1 and led until lap 19, when Bezzecchi passed him into the same corner. It was Bezzecchi’s first win since Mugello. Martin finished third and Ogura, eighth in the early laps, took fourth on the Trackhouse Aprilia with two laps to go. The first Ducati was Marquez in sixth, more than 10 seconds behind the winner on the official classification.

Analysis: Four RS-GPs from two different teams, including a rider carrying a hand injury, finishing ahead of every Ducati is not one rider having a good day. It points to a bike that suited Mandalika’s conditions on Sunday better than anything else on the grid. That is good news for Martin’s machinery, but it also means Aprilia’s other three riders are as likely to take points off Martin as off Marquez.

Marquez limited the damage

Marquez’s sixth place was, per Crash.net, his first Grand Prix finish at Mandalika. Behind him, Alex Marquez was seventh and Di Giannantonio eighth; Francesco Bagnaia and Fermin Aldeguer both crashed out.

Analysis: This is the part of the weekend that should worry Aprilia. On a Sunday when its bikes swept the top four, the championship leader gained only six points on his rival, because Marquez won Saturday and then salvaged 10 points from a race he could not win. Over the full weekend they scored 22 points each. If that is what a bad Ducati weekend looks like for Marquez, Martin needs more than pace advantages to pull clear.

What Mandalika means for the MotoGP title fight: points and scenarios

Each of the five remaining weekends is worth up to 37 points to one rider: 12 for a Sprint win and 25 for a Grand Prix win. That leaves 185 on the table. Crash.net’s post-Mandalika table lists seven riders still in mathematical contention; Bagnaia, 189 points back in ninth, is out.

Analysis: Realistically, the MotoGP title fight is a two-rider contest with one live outsider. Bezzecchi would need to outscore both Martin and Marquez by more than nine points a weekend, every weekend, to overturn a 46-point gap. That is possible only if the top two have a non-score between them. Ogura, Acosta, Di Giannantonio and Fernandez are mathematically alive but need the leaders to stop scoring altogether.

Analysis: The bigger championship effect of Aprilia’s depth is who it pushes down the order. On Sunday at Mandalika, four riders other than Martin finished ahead of Marquez, three of them on Aprilias. Without those bikes in the way, Marquez’s day looks like a podium, and Martin’s six-point gain shrinks or disappears. We have seen no reporting of team orders at Aprilia, and with Bezzecchi still mathematically in it there is no obvious reason for them yet. But the factory now has four bikes capable of running ahead of Marquez, and every one of them that does is worth points to Martin.

What to watch next in the MotoGP title fight

From here, the run-in starts with a triple-header. The 2026 calendar has the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island on Oct. 23-25, Malaysia at Sepang on Oct. 30-Nov. 1 and Qatar at Lusail on Nov. 6-8, the last of which was moved from April. After a weekend off, Portimao (Nov. 20-22) and Valencia (Nov. 27-29) close the season. Crash.net has noted that if the rescheduled Qatar round became unviable, the Portimao and Valencia dates would stand.

• Phillip Island suits Aprilia on recent form. Fernandez won the 2025 Australian Grand Prix, with Bezzecchi third. Analysis: if the RS-GP’s Mandalika advantage carries over, Martin’s threat may come as much from his own brand as from Marquez.
• Saturdays are Marquez’s weapon. He has won the last two Sprints, at Motegi and Mandalika. Analysis: if he keeps banking 12 points on Saturdays, Martin has to beat him on Sundays just to stay level.
• Tire pressure, again.Analysis: Phillip Island’s cooler, windier conditions change how front pressures behave compared with Mandalika’s heat. Watch whether leaders choose to sit in a slipstream early rather than build a gap.
• Fernandez’s hand. He finished second on Sunday despite finger fractures. How he recovers before a back-to-back-to-back run matters for how many Aprilias sit between the title contenders.
• The 37-point weekend. With only two points between them, a perfect weekend for one and a zero for the other would open a 37-point gap in a single weekend. One crash now changes the shape of the season.
