Puducherry bypoll 2026: Thattanchavady Assembly constituency profile, candidates, key facts

Puducherry’s Thattanchavady Assembly constituency is bracing for a multi-cornered byelection scheduled for October 6, 2026, with the Congress, DMK, AINRC, and CPI entering the bypoll fray.

The Thattanchavady Assembly constituency, a prominent urban segment under the Oulgaret Municipality, has become the centre of the spotlight, as Chief Minister and AINRC founder N. Rangasamy chose to vacate the seat after retaining the second seat of the Mangalam constituency, which he won in the April 2026 Assembly polls.

Long considered a personal stronghold of Mr. Rangasamy, who won the seat four times consecutively, starting in 1991 before returning to win it again in 2021, the constituency remains sought-after in Puducherry’s political landscape.

Who are contesting in 2026 Puducherry bypoll?

The upcoming bypoll witnesses a tightly contested race between high-profile candidates. The ruling AINRC has fielded former legislator Ashok Anand, backed by NDA (including the BJP and AIADMK). Meanwhile, the Congress party has fielded E. Vinayagam, who finished second in the April 2026 elections under a regional outfit.

The DMK poses strong competition with former CPI leader K. Sethu Selvam leading the race. Adding to the friction, the CPI has fielded its party secretary A.M. Saleem.

Bypolls will also be conducted in Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu on October 6, and counting will be held on October 9.

Thattanchavady: key facts

A general constituency, Thattanchavady has 26,921 voters, including 14,341 women, 12,575 men, and five third-gender voters. In the Union Territory with small electorate, the electoral outcome is often more related to the personal rapport of the candidate with the electors, though all major political parties have their committed voter base.

Beyond the ongoing grapple for power, Thattanchavady is confined by its long-standing regional and infrastructure issues. The lack of job opportunities and failure to open more units within the local Thattanchavady Industrial estates have been a primary concern. The constituency is also facing an everyday infrastructure deficit, with traffic congestion and the issue of stray dogs having been common subjects of discussion during all election seasons.
