KUALA LUMPUR: The opposition has proposed renaming Putrajaya Hospital after Dr Hasmah Ali in recognition of her contributions to the development of the country’s public healthcare system.
Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin said Perikatan Nasional would implement the proposal if it was given the mandate to govern the country.
“We are proposing (the name change). If the current government doesn’t do it, we will do it next time,” Hamzah, the Larut MP, said when debating the 2027 budget in the Dewan Rakyat today.
He supported a proposal by Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (PN-Masjid Tanah) to rename the hospital after the wife of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Hasmah died at the age of 100 at the National Heart Institute on Sept 28 and was laid to rest at Pusara Negara in Precinct 20, Putrajaya.
During the debate, Hamzah also urged Tabung Haji to review the minimum savings requirement of RM15,000 for depositors to qualify for the haj waiting list.
He said the requirement could burden rural residents who saved money gradually, and raised concerns that existing depositors could lose their places on the waiting list.
Hamzah also said the opposition would continue to serve as a check and balance to ensure the government acted fairly without favouring any party.
