From iPhones to Ice Cream: The Surprising Business Empire of Berkshire Hathaway
২১/১০/২০২৬
A Business Empire Beyond Investments
Berkshire Hathaway has evolved from a struggling textile manufacturer into a diversified global conglomerate. Under Warren Buffett’s leadership, it built a portfolio spanning insurance, railways, energy, manufacturing, retail and services. Its business model combines stock market investments with wholly owned companies, creating multiple sources of revenue and long-term value.
Apple Anchors Its Investment Portfolio
Apple has been one of Berkshire Hathaway’s most prominent stock investments. The technology company represents exposure to consumer electronics, digital services and a globally recognised brand. Berkshire also holds investments in companies such as Coca-Cola, American Express and Chevron. These stakes reflect its approach to owning established businesses with durable competitive advantages.
Dairy Queen Adds Consumer Appeal
Dairy Queen became part of Berkshire Hathaway in 1998, expanding its presence in the quick-service restaurant industry. The brand operates through a franchise network known for ice cream, Blizzards and other food products. Its inclusion illustrates Berkshire’s willingness to own businesses outside traditional finance and industrial sectors, including familiar consumer-facing brands.
Insurance Provides Financial Strength
Insurance remains central to Berkshire Hathaway’s business structure. GEICO, General Re and other insurance operations generate premiums and provide investment funds through their insurance float. Careful underwriting and disciplined capital allocation help support the group’s financial strength. Insurance earnings also give Berkshire resources to invest in new opportunities and expand existing operations.
Railways And Energy Drive Infrastructure
BNSF Railway and Berkshire Hathaway Energy provide significant exposure to essential infrastructure. BNSF transports freight across North America, supporting industrial supply chains and commerce. The energy business operates across utilities, electricity generation and related infrastructure. These capital-intensive operations require substantial investment but offer Berkshire exposure to long-term demand for transportation and energy.
Manufacturing, Retail And Services
Berkshire’s operating businesses extend well beyond its best-known investments. Duracell, See’s Candies, Fruit of the Loom, NetJets, Precision Castparts and Nebraska Furniture Mart represent different industries and customer markets. This breadth helps diversify its revenue base. The group’s decentralised structure allows many subsidiaries to retain operational autonomy while benefiting from Berkshire’s financial resources.
A Diversified Model Built For The Long Term
Berkshire Hathaway’s strength lies in combining publicly traded investments with businesses it owns outright. Its portfolio spans consumer brands, financial services, transportation and industrial operations. This structure spreads exposure across different economic sectors while creating opportunities for reinvestment. As leadership evolves, maintaining disciplined capital allocation and a long-term ownership philosophy remains a central challenge.
