Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday thanked those who joined the party's protest march to the Supreme Court, and said the demonstration was meant to show that people would not be intimidated. In a post on X, he thanked the "millions" who showed support, the leaders of the INDIA bloc, and workers of the Congress and its allies.
Gandhi said the protest was directed against what he called attacks on the Constitution and democracy, and insisted that there were no parallel protests but one agitation with everyone "standing together". He also made an appeal earlier in the day asking people to come out for the march against SIR.
"Today was a very important day because we needed to show the government that the people of India are not going to be intimidated. You cannot beat us, threaten us, frighten us. We will not accept being bullied," the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition said, targeting the Centre.
He also attacked the BJP-led dispensation over the alleged assault on protesters over the weekend. "I was wondering where the cowards of the RSS who were beating the young children the day before yesterday were. Where were those people? Because I didn't see them," he said. "Why don't you wear your little scarves and come out and see what happens? Because you're essentially, like the Prime Minister of India, bullies. You cannot stand up. You can only use power to fight," he added.
Gandhi said, "Every single person is going to stand against these killers of our Constitution, these killers of our democracy. And we're not going to back down." He also thanked civil society groups for backing the protest. "I'd also like to thank everybody from civil society organisations who came, supported us. We value your support, and we love all of you. Thank you all for coming out and defending the idea of India, the idea of the Constitution, the idea of our democracy. I'm extremely proud of every single person who came out on the streets. Thank you," he said.
The Congress leader's remarks came after the party's march to the Supreme Court, where he thanked supporters, allies and civil society groups, repeated his attack on the government and the RSS, and said the opposition would continue to resist what he called attacks on the Constitution and democracy.
