The Bureau of the FIFA Council has approved the appointment of a normalisation committee to oversee the affairs of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) pending the conduct of fresh elections into the federation’s Executive Committee.
The decision was announced on Thursday in a letter signed by FIFA Secretary General, Mattias Grafström, and addressed to Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, MON.
According to the letter, the committee will be responsible for managing the federation’s affairs and ensuring the necessary arrangements are made for the election of a new NFF Executive Committee.
FIFA said the committee would comprise a suitable number of members to be jointly appointed by the world football governing body and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“The normalisation committee shall consist of a suitable number of members, who will be appointed jointly by FIFA and CAF as soon as possible,” the letter stated.
The appointment is expected to provide an interim administrative arrangement for Nigerian football while preparations are made for fresh elections into the NFF leadership.
Committee given May 31, 2027 deadline
FIFA stated that the normalisation committee would remain in office until it had completed its assigned responsibilities, with May 31, 2027, set as the final deadline for the conclusion of its mandate.
“The period during which the normalisation committee shall perform its functions shall expire as soon as it has fulfilled all of its tasks, but by no later than 31 May 2027,” the letter read.
The world football governing body also stipulated that none of the committee members would be eligible to contest any of the positions to be filled during the forthcoming NFF elections.
The restriction is intended to separate the committee’s interim responsibilities from the electoral process it is expected to oversee.
NFF secretariat to continue daily operations
Meanwhile, the NFF Secretariat will continue to handle the day-to-day administration of the federation and the management of Nigerian football until the normalisation committee is appointed.
This arrangement will allow the federation’s routine activities to continue during the transition period.
Further details concerning the composition of the committee and the timetable for its assignment are expected to emerge following consultations between FIFA and CAF.
The development places the administration of Nigerian football under an interim arrangement ahead of the election of a new NFF Executive Committee.
