Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners announced their acquisition of Electronic Arts in Sept. 2025, but only officially closed the deal on Aug. 4 this year. Since then, video game publisher EA has made its first major move: laying off 3% of its global workforce.
The result is a major blow to EA employees, particularly to the iconic RPG developer BioWare. BioWare has been shut down for good, and EA has pulled the plug on its new Mass Effect title. The full memo sent to EA employees is available here.
However, there is good news for Star Wars gamers: Star Wars Battlefront 3 isn’t a pipe dream after all — it is actively in development.
Star Wars Battlefront 3 is on the way
According to Variety, EA’s Cam Weber, president and chief studios officer, and David Tinson, president and COO, confirmed that the publisher is seeing strong success with first-person live-service shooters, particularly Battlefield 6. Not only are future Battlefield titles planned, but the execs also said EA will be “bringing together our Respawn and DICE studios to collaborate on a future project.” Respawn is also working on the next chapter of the Jedi games, Jedi 3.
Variety claims that multiple sources have confirmed that the project is Star Wars Battlefront 3 for Lucasfilm Games.
This appears to debunk rumors that Bungie, the creators of the beloved sci-fi shooter Destiny series, will take over Star Wars Battlefront 3. That might make sense given Bungie’s success with Destiny, but DICE has always handled modern iterations of Star Wars Battlefront with relative care, and we don’t see that changing anytime soon.
It's been nearly a decade since DICE released Star Wars Battlefront 2. The action-shooter was set in the Star Wars universe and featured a single-player campaign following Iden Versio as she goes from Imperial leader of the Inferno Squadron to a tough yet fair Rebel Alliance soldier. On the multiplayer side, players could take part in epic battles across a range of eras, from the Clone Wars to the Age of Rebellion.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 received mixed reviews for its pay-to-win mechanics and limited customization; it eventually turned itself around with new updates. After the success of Andor season 2 and community efforts, an uptick in players returning to the game’s servers brought up whether there would ever be a Star Wars Battlefront 3.
With that now confirmed, and Respawn — whose multiplayer-shooter experience comes from Apex Legends — also helping DICE, we can’t help but wonder what the developers will do next with this beloved title. Since 2017, even more eras have emerged to explore, including The High Republic and Dawn of the Jedi. Can Star Wars fans expect those eras to feature in the future game? Only time — and money — will tell.
