The ambassador of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) to Taiwan yesterday called Taiwan a “faithful partner” that has helped his country develop and prosper, as the Caribbean nation marked the 47th anniversary of its independence at a reception in Taipei.
“Today, we pay tribute to our developmental partners, the countries, international agencies and organizations that have contributed and continue to contribute to our development over the last 47 years,” Ambassador Kenton Chance said in his address.
“In this regard, I express particular gratitude to the Republic of China (Taiwan), which has been a faithful partner over the last 45 years,” he said.

Chance also urged his compatriots to learn from Taiwan’s success.
“My fellow Vincentians, Taiwanese today enjoy the fruits of the hard work of their forebears while building an even more resilient and prosperous country for the next generation,” he said.
“I urge every Vincentian in Taiwan to take inspiration from our host and build sacrificially so the next generation can experience in St. Vincent and the Grenadines a level of development similar to what we enjoy now in Taiwan,” he added.
Representing the Taiwanese government at the reception, Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi (陳明祺) wished the Caribbean ally a happy Independence Day.
Chen said 2026 also marks the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
“Throughout these years, our two nations have developed a close friendship built on mutual trust, shared values, and meaningful cooperation,” he said.
Looking ahead, Chen said Taiwan was committed to deepening its partnership with SVG, particularly in economic cooperation, tourism and agriculture.
“By working together in these areas, we hope to create new opportunities for our local businesses, support economic growth, and bring lasting benefits to both our peoples,” Chen added.
SVG is one of 12 countries that maintain diplomatic relations with the Republic of China, Taiwan’s official name. The two countries established diplomatic ties on Aug. 15, 1981.
