Sarawak establishes new air quality monitoring stations in Kanowit and Belaga to strengthen haze prevention, early detection and enforcement efforts
KUCHING:The Natural Resources and Environment Board Sarawak (NREB) has established two new Air Quality Monitoring Stations (AQMS) in Kanowit and Belaga to enhance air quality monitoring in the state.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said NREB has also set up a mini centre for remote environmental monitoring (CREM) at each divisional office.
“Standard operating procedures for peatland fires and open burning are also being reviewed to strengthen preparedness and inter-agency coordination,” he said this when winding up the debate for his ministry at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.
Awang Tengah, who is also the state’s Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, said as part of the ongoing efforts to maintain good and healthy air quality, the Sarawak Government has formulated the policy and strategic plan for the prevention of peatland fires and illegal open burning to minimise haze pollution in Sarawak.
“This plan outlines four objectives, 13 strategies and 52 action plans, with an emphasis on prevention, early detection, monitoring and enforcement,” he added.
