Arch Manning looked as though he had turned a corner from his struggles over the previous two weeks in the first half against No. 7 Mississippi on Saturday.
Texas' second-year starter recorded his first rushing touchdown of the season and delivered a largely clean opening half. Aside from an interception that was immediately negated by a Texas takeaway from Trinidad Chambliss, Manning completed 13 of 19 passes for 171 yards. He also showcased his deep-ball touch with a 50-yard touchdown strike to Ryan Wingo. That all took place in a half in which the Longhorns built a 24-3 halftime lead.
Then came the second half.
Texas vs Ole Miss final score: Highlights from SEC showdown
It was a familiar script for the 6-foot-4 quarterback, as Texas watched a commanding lead slip away while Manning and the offense struggled to maintain their first-half momentum. Manning himself turned the ball over numerous times. This time, the collapse saw a 21-0 scoring run from the Rebels before Texas could regain the lead for good.
On the opening drive of the half, Manning was strip-sacked, leading immediately to an Ole Miss defensive touchdown to cut Texas' lead to 24-10.
Then, after Chambliss tied the game at 24-24 at the start of the fourth quarter, Manning threw his second interception of the night — this one coming on a first-down pass at the Texas 43-yard line. He redeemed himself for that turnover with his second rushing touchdown on the Longhorns' next offensive series to put Texas back up for good, though Ole Miss did get a last-second heave at the end zone in a 34-27 Texas win.
