Marqeta has expanded its partnership with Coinbase to help enterprise customers launch payment cards backed by stablecoins, extending the companies’ existing relationship into a broader range of digital asset payment services.
The US-based card issuing and payment processing platform is integrating with Coinbase’s stablecoin infrastructure to enable businesses to convert digital asset balances into funds that can be used for everyday purchases. The offering targets both cryptocurrency-focused companies and businesses outside the digital asset industry seeking to incorporate stablecoin payments into their financial services.
The expanded arrangement builds on an existing partnership under which Marqeta issues cryptocurrency-backed cards for Coinbase. The latest development is intended to simplify the process of connecting blockchain-based funds with established card payment networks.
The partnership will allow businesses to offer stablecoin-backed payment cards while relying on Coinbase for digital asset custody, currency conversion, and blockchain settlement, reducing the need to build these capabilities independently.
Coinbase manages stablecoin infrastructure while Marqeta handles cards
The companies will divide responsibilities across the payment process, combining Coinbase’s digital asset infrastructure with Marqeta’s card issuing and processing capabilities.
Coinbase will hold customers’ stablecoin balances in custody and manage conversions between digital assets and traditional fiat currencies. Transactions will settle on Base, the layer-2 blockchain developed by Coinbase, which will provide the on-chain infrastructure supporting the payment arrangement.
Marqeta will manage card issuance, payment processing, and the relationships with banks and card networks required to operate the programs. This structure allows each company to focus on its established capabilities while providing businesses with an integrated payment solution.
Under the model, participating businesses will be able to fund their card programs around the clock using stablecoin balances. Cardholders will be able to use the cards at merchants worldwide that accept the relevant payment networks, connecting digital asset holdings with conventional retail transactions.
The arrangement could prove useful for companies that want to introduce stablecoin payment options without developing their own custody systems, conversion services, or blockchain settlement infrastructure. By combining these functions with established card processing, the companies aim to reduce the operational complexity involved in launching such products.
Stablecoins gain a broader role in payment services
Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to maintain a relatively stable value, typically by tracking a traditional currency such as the US dollar. Their use in payments has attracted interest from financial technology companies and businesses seeking alternatives to conventional cross-border transfers and settlement processes.
Unlike payment systems that depend entirely on traditional banking infrastructure, blockchain-based stablecoin arrangements can support transfers outside standard banking hours. However, actual payment availability and settlement times can still depend on the card program, conversion arrangements, compliance requirements, and participating financial institutions.
By linking stablecoin balances to widely accepted payment cards, Marqeta and Coinbase aim to make digital assets more practical for routine consumer purchases and business payment applications.
For Marqeta, the expansion supports its strategy of delivering stablecoin-backed card products through partnerships rather than building every component internally. The company can use its existing issuing and processing platform to help customers develop payment services that combine traditional currencies with digital assets.
Coinbase, meanwhile, has expanded beyond cryptocurrency trading into custody, blockchain infrastructure and other services for institutional and business customers. The Marqeta partnership extends that infrastructure into card-based spending, creating another potential connection between digital asset markets and conventional commerce.
Enterprise demand shapes the partnership strategy
Marqeta Chief Strategy Officer Anthony Peculic highlighted the breadth of Coinbase’s infrastructure as a suitable foundation for meeting the needs of enterprise customers. He also indicated that the collaboration would expand the range of services businesses could offer through Marqeta’s issuing and processing platform.
The partnership reflects a broader effort across financial technology to integrate blockchain-based assets into familiar payment experiences. Businesses may be able to use stablecoins as a funding mechanism while retaining access to established card networks and merchant acceptance infrastructure.
The commercial impact will depend on adoption by enterprise customers, the availability of supported card programs, and the practical requirements for custody, conversion, and regulatory compliance.
Nevertheless, the expanded relationship positions Marqeta and Coinbase to serve businesses seeking to bridge digital asset balances and everyday payments without requiring them to develop an entire payment infrastructure independently.
