Yankees principal owner Hal Steinbrenner and Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman spoke with the media via Zoom at 10:30 AM Eastern time this morning, after the Yankees exited the ALDS to the Tampa Bay Rays.
Hal Steinbrenner characterized the Yankees roster during the 2026 season as “a World Series championship-caliber team” and said that the roster Brian Cashman put together “was as good as any in baseball,” Steinbrenner stated.
Yankees Bring Back Brian Cashman on New Deal
It was also said Cashman and the Yankees reached a new contract agreement after Cashman’s contract expires following the 2026 season. Cashman will remain in his current role as the Yankees chase a 28th World Series title in 2028. Aaron Boone also spoke to the media separately at 11:30 AM after Cashman and Steinbrenner answered questions.

The Yankees’ next steps remain uncertain for now, as does much of the baseball landscape as we approach the lockout. While the words spoken and the message relayed from the Yankees brass might not be what fans want to hear after another year of frustration and an early October exit for an organization with championship aspirations every year, especially in the midst of a 17-year championship drought, with the last Yankees World Series championship coming in 2009 against the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies, a series in which the Yankees won in six games and finished at the then brand-new Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees also face a list of impending free agents they need to decide on, especially regarding qualifying offers and names like David Bednar, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Trent Grisham.

Yankees New Core Heading Into The 2027 Season
The Yankees also have to assess their current on-field talent. They also need to evaluate younger players, rookies who made their debut this season such as George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones, as well as the growth and development of players like Ben Rice and Cam Schlittler, the perennial 2026 AL Cy Young favorite at the moment.
Fans demand answers in the interim about Cashman, Boone, and Hal Steinbrenner, with one theme: accountability. The Yankees organization will quickly have to get back to the drawing board and improve this roster if it wants to quiet the masses’ criticism. They have to figure out exactly who is playing second base, third base, center field, and how to shore up the bullpen. And the biggest question of all: how can they get back to the World Series and finally win it all?
