Three stories today cite the same underlying data and reach incompatible numbers, and none of the three disputes has a primary document available to settle it.
Three stories today cite the same underlying data and reach incompatible numbers, and none of the three disputes has a primary document available to settle it.
Two outlets cite the same source and still disagree
CryptoBriefing and Coinfomania both cite Token Terminal for the dollar value of Coinbase-issued tokenized stocks sitting in DeFi on Base, yet the two figures are a long way apart: one account puts the deposited value at $262 million, the other at $20 million. Both outlets name the same data provider, which means this is not one site inventing a number and another checking it independently; it is two citations of a single source producing two incompatible readings. Token Terminal itself has not been quoted directly with its own dashboard figures in either report, so there is no primary document in the material that says which number the provider actually published. Until one outlet corrects itself or a direct citation of Token Terminal's own page appears, the honest description is that the scale of tokenized-equity activity on Base is unresolved by a factor of thirteen, not merely imprecise.
A majority reading is not the same as a confirmed one
U.Today and CoinTurk News EN report one Google Trends peak and decline figure for XRP search interest, while Coindoo reports a different peak date and different current and decline figures drawn from the same data source. That amounts to a two-against-one split among three publishers, which under ordinary corroboration counting would look like a majority position, but a majority of publishers repeating the same figure does not establish that the figure is correct if all three are reading one chart differently. Google Trends itself, the primary source, is not quoted with its underlying numbers in any of the three accounts, so there is no way to check whether U.Today and CoinTurk News EN have the dates right and Coindoo does not, or the reverse. All three agree that XRP search interest moved; the dispute is only about when it peaked and by how much it has since fallen, and on that narrower question the newsroom's own coverage splits.
Confirmed and unproven cannot both describe the same theft
Crypto Economy describes the cause of a $4.8 million Ledger wallet theft as unproven, while CoinDesk and Cointribune report that the theft was caused by confirmed spy-chip implants planted in Ledger devices. This is a harder conflict than the other two because it is not a numbers dispute but an attribution one: either investigators have established the mechanism of compromise or they have not, and "unproven" and "confirmed" cannot both be accurate descriptions of the same investigative state at the same time. Carried by five feeds across CoinDesk, CoinTurk News EN, Cointribune, Crypto Economy and Decrypt, this is among the more widely distributed stories of the period, but the distribution here is of a disagreement, not of a settled fact, since two independent publishers back the confirmed-implant account against one standing apart. None of the five accounts in the material supplies a forensic report, a vendor statement or a law-enforcement filing that would count as the primary document on hardware compromise, so nothing published lets this edition say which side is right. The theft itself, at $4.8 million, is not in dispute; only its cause is.
In all three cases the disagreement sits inside the citation, not around it, which is a different and harder problem than one outlet simply getting a story wrong. Readers should treat the Coinbase, XRP and Ledger figures as open questions until a primary document, not a second citation of the same one, closes them.
