Uniswap has decided that buying and selling ETH should not always cost the same. On October 14, 2026, the exchange switched on its VolatilePair Hook on Ethereum mainnet, starting with an ETH/USDC pool.
The pitch is simple. Instead of one flat fee for everyone, the pool charges two separate fees, one for buys and one for sells, and adjusts both based on where the price has been heading.
How the VolatilePair Hook works
The VolatilePair Hook replaces a single fee with two dynamic fees. Both are recalculated on every swap, using recent price movements as the input.
The second piece is a temporary surcharge. It applies to trades that correct price deviations after large market shifts.
Those correcting trades are typically where liquidity providers get hurt. When the broader market moves and a pool’s price lags behind, arbitrageurs step in to close the gap, and with a static fee, they capture that spread at the expense of the people who deposited funds.
The surcharge is designed to claw some of that value back. Uniswap frames it as protection for liquidity providers against losses from static-fee arbitrage.
The numbers behind the bet
Uniswap is not launching this into a quiet corner of its business. Trading on volatile pairs has topped $500 billion on the exchange so far in 2026.
The VolatilePair Hook also has a sibling with a track record. In September 2026, Uniswap introduced the StablePair Hook, aimed at stablecoin pairs such as USDC/USDT.
That product reached $3.1 billion in trading volume across stablecoin pools within its first four weeks.
Governance keeps the dials adjustable
One notable design choice is that the hook’s parameters and fee logic can be recalibrated through Uniswap governance.
Uniswap says the setup supports future enhancements without requiring complex migrations. Liquidity providers can move their positions into the new pool, and later upgrades are meant to happen around them rather than forcing another move.
What this means for liquidity providers and traders
For traders, the change introduces a new variable. The cost of a swap may now depend on which direction they are trading and what the market has just done, so the quoted fee is no longer a fixed constant to tune out.
The metrics to watch are how much liquidity migrates into the new pool, how its volume compares with the StablePair Hook’s $3.1 billion debut month, and whether governance ends up tweaking the surcharge once real trading data comes in.
