Concerns Raised Over Expanding Illegal Dump Near 12-Story Building in Holguín

A resident named Sarah Je brought to light on Saturday the growing issue of an illegal dump site located in front of a 12-story building near the Vladimir Ilich Lenin Provincial Hospital in Holguín. Her concerns were shared on the Facebook group 'Compra y venta en Holguín'.

According to her account, waste is being transported to the site using sacks, wheelbarrows, and vehicles. She mentioned that among the trash are coconut shells left by vendors from Lenin Avenue and accused both individuals and small businesses (mipymes) of using the location as a dumping ground.

The post triggered a wave of criticism from other locals, who described similar problems affecting various parts of the city. "Holguín has transformed from the city of parks to the city of filth," remarked one user. Another pointed out that in the Alcides Pino neighborhood, piled-up waste is making pedestrian movement difficult.

Inadequate Waste Management Sparks Outrage

Comments also criticized the lack of garbage collection by the municipal waste management company. One participant mentioned that residents have been waiting for over two months for garbage removal, while another noted that without regular service, dumps simply move from one corner to another.

A comment summed up the frustration of many, highlighting the government's failure: "They sit comfortably in air-conditioned offices and cars, hiding behind the embargo instead of seeking solutions to these issues that are creating a complex hygienic and epidemiological environment for a vulnerable population."

Cuban Government's Persistent Failure

Despite the Cuban government's acknowledgment of inadequacies in waste collection, no concrete solutions have been provided, leaving many residents asking, "Where is the city's government leader?"

Earlier in October, residents reported a dump near the central Plaza de la Marqueta, close to a daycare and food stalls, mentioning that although garbage trucks pass by, they don't pick up the trash.

In late September, a resident from the Lenin neighborhood reported makeshift dumps just meters from the Mis Primeros Años daycare and the Amistad con los Pueblos school, with waste uncollected for over a month.

"The smell is unbearable," the complainant wrote. "The children are not to blame for this, we are endangering their lives," she warned.

Health Risks and Environmental Concerns

In August, a dumpster surrounded a primary school just days before the start of the school year. Previously, the local press lamented that dumps burned nightly in neighborhoods, releasing dioxins, furans, and carbon monoxide.

The Ministry of Public Health acknowledged in September a simultaneous increase in dengue, diarrhea, and hepatitis cases as sanitation issues worsened.

The Pan American Health Organization donated 50 fumigation devices to the province to strengthen the control of the Aedes aegypti mosquito across its 14 municipalities.
