Guwahati, Oct 20: Homestays across Assam have come under scrutiny following the apprehension of 24 foreign nationals allegedly staying illegally in the country, with the police operation raising questions about visitor verification at accommodation facilities.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the foreign nationals were apprehended from different homestays across the state following specific intelligence inputs.
In a post on X, Sarma said Assam welcomed visitors celebrating Puja but would take strict action against illegal immigrants in accordance with the law. He also commended the police for remaining vigilant.
The operation comes amid an intensified crackdown by Assam Police on alleged illegal entry into India by foreign nationals.
The apprehensions have drawn attention to the role of homestays in monitoring visitors, particularly as the state steps up enforcement against suspected illegal immigration.
However, the chief minister’s announcement did not identify the nationalities of those apprehended, name the homestays involved or indicate whether the establishments had violated visitor-registration requirements.
Assam shares a 267.5-km international border with Bangladesh, stretching across Sribhumi, Cachar, Dhubri and South Salmara-Mankachar districts. The state also has an Integrated Check Post at Sutarkandi in Sribhumi district to facilitate cross-border movement and trade.
Further details of the apprehensions, including the circumstances of the alleged illegal stay and the legal action initiated against those detained, were not immediately available.
