A fundraising appeal has been launched to support a 31-year-old barber who suffered serious burns in an explosion at his Southampton home.
According to the appeal, the father of two came to Bermuda from Costa Rica and notes that he often mentions his family back in Costa Rica and “he sacrifices being away from them, to provide the best life possible for them, and others in his family.”
Following the explosion, he was treated in hospital in Bermuda before being flown by air ambulance to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
The appeal seeks to help with his medical expenses and the loss of personal belongings. “My hope is to raise funds to offset his medical costs and give him a start at life again. As you can imagine a fair bit of his personal belongings was also lost in the explosion,” the appeal states.
The appeal says his exployer will cover the full cost of maintaining his current health insurance, adding: “This will enable him to receive the necessary medical treatment, albeit this will not be able to cover the cost for everything.”
At the time of writing, the GoFundMe page showed $48,488 raised towards a $50,000 target.
As previously reported, police and other first responders were dispatched to the area of Palm Valley and Westdale Lane in Southampton at around 8.55pm on Wednesday, October 14, following reports of an explosion. Officials have previously said that the man was left in critical condition and the cause of the explosion is suspected to have been a gas leak.
