RANAU: Continuous heavy rain since yesterday evening triggered a landslide that damaged structures on a hillside in Kampung Gorowot, Kundasang.
The landslide caused soil to slide down the slope, affecting a roofed structure and a fence near a building.
Ranau district police chief Superintendent Mursalin Mahmud said police received a public complaint through the MERS 999 emergency line before dispatching personnel to the scene at 4.15pm.
He said personnel from the Kundasang police station, together with the Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) unit, arrived about five minutes later to inspect the area.
"Initial checks found that the landslide was caused by rainwater overflowing from the hillside following continuous heavy rain since yesterday evening.
"However, no casualties were reported," he said in a statement today.
Mursalin said the continuous rain had also caused flash floods in the area.
He advised residents, particularly those living near slopes and hilly areas, to remain alert to the risk of landslides.
"Members of the public are advised to remain aware of their surroundings and report any incidents to the authorities immediately so that assistance can be provided promptly.
"Ranau police are always on standby to ensure the safety and well-being of the community," he said.
