An unlikely critic is slamming the City Council’s anti-Amazon drive: the National Urban League, which actually cares about the jobs the so-called Delivery Protection Act would kill.
NUL President Marc Morial warns that the measure would deal a devastating blow to “black and brown New Yorkers.”
The bill would outlaw the work of dozens of minority-owned independent businesses operating as last-mile delivery subcontractors, because the council’s geniuses believe Amazon should have to hire those workers directly.
The Teamsters figure they could then pick up a few hundred new members, and what are the thousands of livelihoods the bill would destroy against that?
And never mind that passing this law would clearly just prompt Amazon to shut down its warehouses in the city, killing those jobs, too.
Of course, the left would consider that a win too, same as it did killing the chance for an Amazon headquarters in the city: We don’t need no stinking job-creators.
Speaker Julie Menin needs to scrap the Delivery Protection Act pronto.
